Antarctic and Southern Ocean Science Horizon Scan
SCAR
The Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR) announces a call
for input to the first Antarctic and Southern Ocean Science Horizon
Scan, a planning effort to identify the most compelling questions in and
from Antarctica and the Southern Ocean science over the next two decades.
This community-based effort calls for opinions and views of the most
important and compelling questions in Antarctic and Southern Ocean
science over the next two decades. Questions can be of importance to
global issues and/or questions grounded in curiosity-driven research
capitalizing on the unique setting of Antarctica and the Southern Ocean.
The Horizon Scan process will be based on inclusive, community-wide
consultations led and managed by SCAR. Horizon Scan organizers invite
all interested parties and individuals to participate throughout the
process. No formal association with SCAR is necessary. The intent is to
develop as broad a view as possible of future directions in Antarctic
and Southern Ocean science.
Deadline for input: Saturday, 15 June 2013.
To participate, please go to:

Elementa: Science of the Anthropocene
Open-Access Journal
The journal 'Elementa: Science of the Anthropocene,' a nonprofit,
open-access journal, announces a call for submissions. Original research
reports on new knowledge of the Earth's physical, chemical, and
biological systems; interactions between human and natural systems; and
steps that can be taken to mitigate and adapt to global change are
invited.
Submissions are now accepted through the online peer-review system:
http://www.editorialmanager.com/elementa.
'Elementa' is organized initially into six knowledge domains, each led
by an editor. The following domains are now accepting submissions:
- Atmospheric Science, edited by Detlev Helmig, University of
Colorado Boulder.
- Earth and Environmental Science, edited by Joel D. Blum,
University of Michigan.
- Ecology, edited by Donald R. Zak, University of Michigan.
- Ocean Science, edited by Jody W. Deming, University of Washington.
- Sustainable Engineering, edited by Michael E. Chang, Georgia
Institute of Technology.
The journal is published on an open-access, public-good basis. Open
access allows research to be freely available and allows users to cite,
re-purpose, and build upon existing published research in the interests
of accelerating scientific progress, and ultimately resulting in public
good.
To submit a manuscript to the "Elementa" peer-review system, go to:

IASC Medal Award 2014
International Arctic Science Committee
International Arctic Science Committee (IASC) Medals are awarded in
recognition of exceptional and sustained contributions to the
understanding of the Arctic. A maximum of one award is made each year,
assuming that there is a nominee of appropriate quality. The award of
medals is normally by the President of IASC during the Arctic Science
Summit Week (or exceptionally at another major international meeting)
following the ratification of the award.
The Medal Awards Committee, composed of Carlo Barbante (Chair), Karin
Lochte and Thorsteinn Gunnarsson, will consider the nominations received
and the medal will be awarded at the Arctic Science Summit Week 2014 in
Helsinki, Finland in April 2014.
Nomination deadline: 31 December 2013.
