Organizers of the 5th International Conference on Polar and Alpine
Microbiology (PAM) announce a call for registration and abstracts. The
conference will be held 8-12 September 2013 in Big Sky, Montana.

The conference will provide a multi-disciplinary forum for scientists,
students, and professionals to discuss aspects of cold-adapted
microorganisms and the roles they play in polar and alpine environments,
exchange ideas and experiences on an international scale, and explore
emerging areas of interest.

The following conference sessions will address topics related to
prokaryotes, eukaryotes, viruses, technological developments, and
process related research:

- Sub-zero microbiology: links to other ecosystems;
- Microbial first responders to a changing world;
- Thresholds and tipping points in the cryosphere;
- Subglacial microbiology;
- Evolution of psychrophilic microorganisms;
- Biodiversity, ecosystem function, and environmental change: past,
present, and future; and
- Earth's icy biosphere as a model for life on extraterrestrial
subzero worlds.

PAM 2013 will award several competitive grants to early career
scientists from the U.S. based on strength and relevance of abstract

    International Workshop on Antarctic Ice Rises
    26-29 August 2013
    Tromso, Norway

Organizers announce a call for registration for the International
Workshop on Antarctic Ice Rises. The workshop will convene 26-29 August
2013 in Tromso, Norway.

This interdisciplinary workshop on Antarctic ice rises will provide a
forum to discuss the related physical science and to bring an Earth
systems science perspective to the study of major controls of Antarctic
ice-sheet dynamics.

The goal of this workshop is to develop a summary of the current
challenges of ice-rise research, share community-wide understandings of
the current status of knowledge beyond individual disciplines, and
identify and produce recommendations for future directions of
collaborative interdisciplinary work on ice rises.

Travel support is available for early career scientists and attendees
from counties in economic transition.

  1. Call for Proposals for ICASS VIII
    Sustainability Research Project Discussion Panels
    22-26 May 2014

Organizers of the 8th International Congress of Arctic Social Sciences
(ICASS VIII) announce a call for proposals for sustainability research
project discussion panels during ICASS VIII, which will be held 22-26
May 2014, at the main campus of the University of Northern British
Columbia in Prince George, British Columbia, Canada.

Organizers plan to schedule time for two dedicated discussion panels on
large-scale sustainability research projects. Each panel will be
allocated one hour. The panels will be held in the same venue as the
keynote speech, and will be scheduled at a time that does not conflict
with scheduled sessions so that all conference participants may attend.

Organizers invite short proposals that:

- Provide the title of the project,
- Describe how the hour will be used, and
- Describe who will participate in the panel.

Organizers encourage innovative proposals for such discussion panels and
suggest that a minimum of 15 minutes be dedicated to audience feedback,
questions following the presentation, or other forms of discussion and
interaction.

There is no prescribed format for proposals. Organizers request that
proposals be kept to a maximum of two pages.

The IASSA Council will review proposals and select two sustainability
research projects to be showcased via the panels. Proposals not selected
may be submitted for consideration for the regular sessions.

Proposal submission deadline: Tuesday, 3 September 2013.
Decisions will be communicated by 10 September 2013.

    Arctic Energy Summit

Organizers of the 2013 Arctic Energy Summit announce availability of
early registration. The conference, entitled "Richness, Resilience, and
Responsibility--The Arctic as a Lasting Frontier," will convene 8-10
October 2013 in Akureyri, Iceland.

The conference is a multi-disciplinary forum for industry officials,
scientists, academics, policy makers, energy professionals, and
community leaders to collaborate and share leading approaches on Arctic
energy issues. The 2013 Summit will address energy extraction,
production, and transmission in the Arctic.
