The Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences seeks a postdoctoral research
scientist to investigate the influence of ocean acidification on trace
gas emission. This full-time three-year position is based in East
Boothbay, Maine.

The successful candidate will study the influence of ocean acidification
on the biological processes that govern the concentrations and emission
of dimethyl sulfide (DMS) in the surface oceans. The work is associated
with a project involving large-scale experiments on natural waters with
a focus on identifying the key processes involved and understanding the
extent to which they may change in the future.

The successful candidate will have a PhD in marine science,
environmental microbiology, or environmental chemistry. Preferred
qualifications are an ability and interest to work across biological and
chemical disciplines, to link molecular regulation to biogeochemical
processes, and an interest in predictive model development. The
preferred candidate will have published (or submitted) their
dissertation chapters in peer-reviewed journals.

Canatec seeks Postdoctoral Fellow
Industrial Sea Ice Hazards
St. Johns's, Newfoundland, Canada

Canatec and the Marine Institute at Memorial University of Newfoundland
seek a postdoctoral fellow for an industrial research, design, and
implementation of a decision support system for managing sea ice and
iceberg hazards during offshore petroleum operations. The position is
for two years, followed by full-time employment opportunity, and based
in St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada.

Canatec is building decision-support tools to improve their monitoring
and advising of hazardous ice conditions to support marine transits and
offshore operations in ice. In this joint project with the Marine
Institute the successful candidate will work on a system used by ice
personnel and crew to track ice and met-ocean conditions that might
affect operations and provide full decision-support on coping with ice
hazards and alerts. Initially the focus will be on petroleum drilling
operations, but this can be extended to all other operations in ice,
including seismic surveys, construction and trenching, fishing, and
tourism.

The Canatec staff will support the candidate from their Newfoundland,
Calgary, and Netherlands offices and will supply information on best
practices and its current software used in supporting offshore
operations in ice. Canatec will also supply opportunities for the to
participate in some of its commercial consulting, innovation, and field
advisory projects. Memorial University will provide the candidate with
access to its full range of colleagues and research facilities including
the simulator, access to research voyages in ice conditions, specialized
software and instrumentation, ship performance data, and displays.

The successful candidate will have completed a PhD by October 2013 or
have completed this degree within the past two years and must be able to
model, and build in software, data capture, transformation, analysis,
transfer, and communication involved with decision-making in this area
of marine industrial practice. This will require strong software
engineering skills, and knowledge of or ability to learn best practices
in ice surveillance and management in offshore petroleum operations and
maritime transits in zones affected by sea ice and icebergs.

Preference is given to Canadian citizens and residents, but applications
from Candidates of any country are welcomed.

University of Alaska seeks PhD Research Student
Water Mobility in Frozen Soils
Fairbanks, Alaska

The Institute of Northern Engineering at the University of Alaska
Fairbanks (UAF) seeks a PhD student to study water mobility in frozen
soils as a research assistant. The position funded for up to four years
and is based in Fairbanks, Alaska.

The successful candidate will participate in an interdisciplinary
project to quantify relationships among key variables in soil freezing
and thawing processes including unfrozen water content and mobility,
soil zeta potential, and soil micro-fabric. Results from this
interdisciplinary research may help to improve frost heave theory,
determine strength of frozen ground, and thermal modeling for
infrastructure development and long-term permafrost stability.

Successful candidates for this position will have a strong interest in
soils, physical chemistry and surface chemistry, and relevant
measurement techniques. Priority will be given to candidates with a
Bachelor's or Master's of Science degree in engineering or physical
science.

Aalto University seeks Two Professors
Ice Mechanics and Hydrodynamics
Helsinki, Finland

The Department of Applied Mechanics at the Aalto University School of
Engineering seeks applicants for two professor positions. These tenure
track or tenured positions are in ice mechanics and hydrodynamics, they
can be filled on any level from assistant professor to full professor,
and are based in Helsinki, Finland.

The research focus areas of the department are: advanced structures,
flow modeling, and Arctic marine and ice technology. The open positions
are intended to strengthen especially the research group on Arctic
marine and ice technology.

The research group on Arctic marine and ice technology conducts research
on ice mechanics and ice dynamics especially discrete modeling of sea
ice failure processes, ice ridges and pile-up processes, ice loads on
ships and marine structures, model ice, and safety of ships. Currently
there are two professors in this research area. Arctic technology is
also a research focus area of the Aalto University School of Engineering.

Applicants in all subfields of Arctic technology and hydrodynamics are
invited to apply. However, for the first position, preference will be
given to candidates with specialization in ice mechanics and its
applications in Arctic marine technology. For the second position,
preference will be given to candidates with specialization in
hydrodynamics and its applications to Arctic marine technology. It is
recognized that research in hydrodynamics related to Arctic engineering
is a growing area. Thus, candidates with solid background in
hydrodynamics and a strong interest in expanding into Arctic research
are encouraged to apply.
