The Dickey Center for International Understanding at Dartmouth College
invites applications for the 2014-15 (September-June) Dartmouth Fellows
Program in U.S. Foreign Policy and International Security. Applicants
from all disciplines working on research that bears directly on U.S.
foreign policy and international security, including polar and northern
issues, are welcome to apply. While scholars at all stages of their
careers will be considered, applications from recent recipients of a PhD
or equivalent degree are especially welcome. Fellows must be in
residence during their fellowship and participate in Dickey Center
seminars and events and are invited to take advantage of other Dartmouth
activities.

The Dickey Center for International Understanding encompasses the
Institute for Arctic Studies, an interdisciplinary center for the study
of the environment, climate change and policy implications; War and
Peace Studies; the Global Heath Initiative; and new research foci in
human development and gender. Researchers with projects that intersect
any of these areas are particularly encouraged to apply.

Fellows receive competitive stipends and benefits, comparable to those
offered by other fellowship programs. Faculty on leave from their home
institutions receive half of their annual salary, up to $50,000.

Applications are evaluated on the basis of the quality and significance
of the proposed research and its relevance to U.S. foreign policy and
international security, and the ability of the applicant to benefit from
interaction with and mentoring from Dartmouth faculty.

The original application date for this position is Friday, 17 January
2014. Applicants must submit a curriculum vitae, a statement of up to
1,500 words describing the proposed research project, a writing sample,
two letters of reference sent directly to the Dickey Center, and a
confidential financial statement on a separate page indicating the
applicant's other sources of support available during fellowship period
and--for current faculty only--current salary.

The University of Washington is expanding its commitment to research and
education about polar regions through its 'Future of Ice' Initiative,
which aims to strengthen disciplinary areas, foster collaborative
interdisciplinary research, and further develop partnerships with the
diverse set of stakeholders in the polar regions.

As part of the Future of Ice Initiative, the University of Washington
invites applications for three new tenure-track faculty positions in the
College of the Environment, and several new research faculty positions
in the Applied Physics Laboratory. In addition, the Quaternary Research
Center and the Polar Science Center in the Applied Physics Laboratory
invite applications for postdoctoral researchers.

Positions are available in a variety of fields, including polar marine
ecosystems, polar climate (ocean-ice-atmosphere) dynamics, and

Two PhD studentships are available in the United Kingdom, in relation to
ice-ocean projects that will begin October 2014.

One position is based at British Antarctic Survey in Cambridge, United
Kingdom. It is focused on the dynamics of the Ross Gyre in Antarctica, a
large circulation in the Pacific sector of the Southern Ocean that plays
an important role in coupling the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) to
the nearby shelf seas. This position will be supervised by Paul Holland.

The other position is based at Imperial College in London, United
Kingdom. It is focused on modeling ice-ocean processes driving sea-level
rise from West Antarctica. This position will be supervised by Matt
Piggott.

The Department of Geology and Geophysics and the International Arctic
Research Center at the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) invite
applications for a tenure-track position at the level of Assistant or
Associate Professor in the field of Arctic system science with a focus
on sea ice. The position will be based in Fairbanks, Alaska.

The successful applicant is expected to pursue a vigorous, externally
funded research program in the field of Arctic system science. He or she
will also teach graduate or upper undergraduate-level courses in the
field of earth system science. Breadth of expertise including ability to
interact with researchers outside of the sea ice community is essential.
Experience in combining satellite sea-ice observations with changes
observed in other components of the Arctic climate system is highly
desirable.

Applicants must have a PhD in an appropriate field by the time of the
appointment. Evidence of postdoctoral experience or proof of the
applicant's ability to acquire funding from external sources must be
provided.
