The faculty of Humanities, Social Sciences, and Education at the
University of Tromso seek applicants for the position of Director of the
Barents Institute. The appointment is for a fixed term of four years
with possible extension. The position is available starting 1 March 2014
and is based in Kirkenes, Norway.

The Barents Institute was established in 2006 with the goal of producing
knowledge about issues related to the Norwegian-Russian border and the
Barents region. The Director is responsible for the overall academic and
administrative activities of the Institute including strategic
development and planning of research and outreach activities;
initiation, participation, and management of externally funded research
activities; maintaining and developing international, national, and
regional collaboration; and representing the Institute and the
University of Tromo at national and international professional forums.

The successful candidate will have experience as an associate professor
and/or hold a PhD in a relevant subject area; experience in the
development and management of research; and experience in financial and
personnel management.

The Science and Technical Project Services (S&TPS) Planning Group,
working in coordination with NSF in an Antarctic Support Contract (ASC)
seeks applicants for the position of Science Planning Manager. This is a
professional position based in Arlington, Virginia.

The role of the S&TPS Planning Group is to understand project goals,
define operational requirements, and minimize risk for U.S. Antarctic
Program (USAP) science and technical events. This group is the primary
ASC interface for grantees, the NSF, and international agencies within
an assigned portfolio of science projects.

The S&TPS Planning Manager will oversee the Science Planning Group and
support both immediate and long term planning activities in conjunction
with ASC and NSF. The position reports directly to the S&TPS Manager.
The successful candidate will coordinate with S&TPS Manager and Science
Implementation Manager for seamless support of USAP grantees and NSF
management; prepare budget and staffing plans for the S&TPS Planning
Group; oversight; and coordinate science-planning activities.

The ideal candidate will have at least five years of experience in
Antarctic, Arctic, or remote location logistics and science support,
project management, and/or field data collection and will be familiar
with USAP field, station, and ship operations. A science degree in a
field relevant to USAP research is preferred. Established relationships
with the science community and long-range science planning experience
are desired. Preferred candidate will have deployed to polar regions
with a research project.

The successful candidate must understand science planning and deployment
processes; have a thorough understanding of the challenges of performing
research in the Antarctic; have experience with long range planning and
day-to-day personnel and task management; have demonstrated experience
as a manager; and have experience interfacing with government agencies,
international collaborations, engineering, and logistics support groups
in a professional and cooperative manner. Previous experience with
science logistical or field planning in ASC or USAP, or equivalent
remote science program experience, is required.

    Melting Sea Ice: Microbial and Physical Characteristics

The Polar Science Center at the Applied Physics Laboratory of the
University of Washington is seeking a postdoctoral research associate to
study microbial and physical characteristics of melting Arctic sea ice.
The initial appointment for this full-time position is for 12 months
with a second year contingent on satisfactory progress. The position is
based in Seattle, Washington.

The successful applicant will contribute to a NSF sponsored project
assessing the habitability and physical structure of melting Arctic sea
ice and explore the influence of biogenic particles such as ice algae,
bacteria and polymer gels on the melting behavior of the ice. This is an
interdisciplinary project that focuses on the interplay between ice
microbiology, polymers and ice physics. Responsibilities of the position
include design and execution of laboratory and field experiments,
collection of data in the lab and field, data analysis and synthesis,
manuscript preparation, and presentation of results at national
meetings. Significant travel to field sites at Barrow, Alaska and to a
collaborating laboratory in Switzerland will be required. Laboratory
work will be conducted in a walk-in freezer laboratory at the University
of Washington as well as in a conventional wet lab.

The successful applicant will have a PhD in biological oceanography,
microbiology, marine microbial ecology, geophysics, or a related
discipline. Demonstrated laboratory and/or field-applied skills in
microbial ecology and molecular biology scientific methodologies,
including up-to-date knowledge of microscopy, optical imaging, and
imaging analysis techniques in biological and/or physical systems are
strongly recommended. Prior field experience, and excellent skills in
scientific deduction, and strong proclivities for working independently
are preferred. The ideal candidate will have some experience of ice
physics and has previously worked in an interdisciplinary context and
experience with marine bacteria and/or extremophiles.

The Northwest Arctic Borough (NAB) seeks applicants for a Science
Director. This full-time position is based in Kotzebue, Alaska.

The NAB, in cooperative grant agreement with industry partners, has
established a science division to conduct research in the region of the
borough. The grant agreement establishes a 15 member Science Steering
Committee that will provide guidance on the development of the science
program. Position responsibilities include assisting in all aspects of
the design, implementation, and management of developing and sustaining
a science division within the NAB Planning Department. Establishing a
science division will require working with the NAB Science Steering
Committee, the Subsistence Mapping Project and other NAB departments and
organizations.

The duties of the successful candidate are to:

  • Develop and manage an integrated science division within the NAB
    Planning Department.
  • Coordinate the efforts of the steering committee and work closely with
    the NAB Steering Committee, NAB departments, partners, and stakeholders
    to facilitate the setting of research priorities for the NAB and the
    subsequent implementation of the research priorities and initiatives.
  • Comply with all terms of the grant agreement and any other grant
    agreements entered into and for setting and managing a yearly budget
  • Write proposals seeking additional grant funds; and strengthening
    partnerships with the scientific community, universities, state and
    federal agencies, and other organizations.

The Science Director will interface with both scientists and
stakeholders, and serve as a communicator and facilitator to help
advance the NAB science agenda.

Qualifications of the successful candidate include:

  • A bachelor's degree in a science, environmental, or other related
    field or five years equivalent work related experience.
  • Minimum two years relevant work experience.
  • Recognized ability to meet multiple deadlines by maintaining a high
    level of organization.
  • Excellent written and oral communication and presentation skills
    including communicating complex concepts in a clear and effective manner
    to a general audience.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to facilitate
    groups with diverse opinions.
  • Demonstrated strong analytical skills, including an ability to
    synthesize large amounts of scientific information.
  • Experience in writing proposals and developing a budget.
  • Proficiency in Windows, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, and a high level
    of internet and email competency.
  • Ability to travel.
