  1. Registration and Abstract Submission Available
    10th Annual Polar Technology Conference
    15-17 April 2014
    Bloomington, Indiana

Organizers of the 10th annual Polar Technology Conference announce that
registration and abstract submission are now available. The conference,
hosted by the Pervasive Technology Institute of Indiana University, will
be held 15-17 April 2014 in Bloomington, Indiana.

The primary purpose of this conference is to bring together polar
scientists and technology developers in a forum to exchange information
on research system operational needs and technology solutions that have
been successful in polar environments. This exchange of knowledge helps
to address issues of design, implementation, and deployment for systems
that are to achieve their research goals in the polar regions.

Conference registration is now available. Abstracts for oral and/or
poster presentations may also be submitted. Presentations in all
technology fields are invited. Regular oral presentations and a poster
session will be scheduled.

Extended abstract submission deadline: Monday, 24 March 2014.

Additional details, registration, and abstract submission are available
at: http://PolarTechnologyConference.org

  1. Call for Abstracts and Participation
Biomass Burning and Effects of Ammonium and Ozone Deposition
    1-3 October 2014
    St. Petersburg, Russia

A workshop on biomass burning and effects of ammonium and ozone
deposition in Northern Fennoscandia and North-West Russia will be held
1-3 October 2014 in St. Petersburg, Russia. Organizers invite community
participation and abstract submission. The workshop is co-funded by the
Nordic Council of Ministers.

High air concentrations of ammonium were detected at low and high
altitude sites in Sweden, Finland, and Norway during the spring (and
summer) of 2006, coinciding with polluted air from biomass burning in
eastern Europe passing over central and northern Fennoscandia. Unusually
high values for throughfall deposition of ammonium were detected at one
low altitude site and several high altitude sites in northern Sweden.
The occurrence of the high ammonium in throughfall differed between the
summer months 2006, most likely related to the timing of precipitation
events. There were also record high concentrations of ozone and most
other pollutants detected on Svalbard, as well as on Iceland. High
amounts of ammonia were also detected in the PM10 particles sampled in
eastern Finland during May 2006. The ammonia dry deposition may have
contributed to unusual visible injuries on the tree vegetation in
northern Fennoscandia that occurred during spring and summer 2006, in
combination with high ozone concentrations.

Workshop organizers encourage students and scientists to submit
abstracts within the following topics:

- Emissions from biomass burning
- Pollution transport to the Arctic
- Nitrogen and Ozone deposition in the Arctic
- Vegetation injuries
- Remote sensing based monitoring

Abstracts of no more than 200 words, and written in the English
language, must be submitted via email (lrh [at] met.no). Travel support of up
to 500 Euro is available for Russian and Nordic students and scientists.
Notification of abstract acceptance and travel support will be given
within the end of April.

  1. Registration and Call for Abstracts
9th Antarctic Meteorological Observing, Modeling, and
    Forecasting Workshop 2014
    9-11 June 2014
    Charleston, South Carolina

The SPAWAR Systems Center Atlantic, Polar Programs IPT, in cooperation
with and hosted by the College of Charleston Department of Physics and
Astronomy, attendance and participation in the 9th Antarctic
Meteorological Observing, Modeling, and Forecasting Workshop (AMOMFW).
The workshop will be held 9-11 June 2014 (with an icebreaker on the
evening of 8 June) at the College of Charleston's School of Education
Health and Human Performance Center.

This workshop brings together those with research and
operational/logistical interests in Antarctic meteorology and
forecasting and related disciplines. As in the past, the annual
activities and status of the observing (e.g. Automatic Weather Stations)
and modeling (Antarctic Mesoscale Prediction System) efforts will be
addressed, and feedback and results from their user communities will be
solicited. More broadly, this workshop also is a forum for current
results and ideas in Antarctic meteorology, numerical weather
prediction, and weather forecasting, from contributors around the world.
There will be discussions on the relationships among international
efforts and Antarctic forecasting, logistical support, and science.
Organizers welcome papers and posters on these topics.

Registration and abstract submission deadline: 9 May 2014.
Reduced rate lodging deadline: 1 May 2014.

Antarctic Near-Shore and Terrestrial Observing System Proposal
22 August 2014 (prior to the start of XXXIII SCAR meetings)
    Auckland, New Zealand

The Antarctic Near-Shore and Terrestrial Observing System (ANTOS) is
proposed as a Life Sciences Expert Group which will survey the impact of
change on Antarctic life. A workshop aimed at developing an
implementation framework for ANTOS will be held in Auckland, New Zealand
on Friday, 22 August 2014, immediately prior to the start of the XXXIII
SCAR meetings.
