  1. Postdoctoral Research Position
    Quaternary and Glacial Geology
    Institute of Earth Sciences
    University of Iceland
    Reykjavik, Iceland

The Institute of Earth Sciences, University of Iceland seeks applicants
for a postdoctoral research position in Quaternary and glacial geology.
The position is funded for two years, with an expected start date of 1
November 2014, and is based in Reykjavik, Iceland.

Applications are encouraged from candidates who have received their PhD
within the last five years and who have experience designing and
carrying out research in Quaternary geology, glacial geology, and/or
paleoclimatology. Experience in research aimed at linkages between
ocean/atmosphere circulation and glacier mass in the past, the present,
and/or the future is preferred.

Evaluation of applications will be based on the research plan proposed,
quality and scientific validity of previous research, as well as the
initiatives and publishing activity of the applicant. The Institute of
Earth Sciences has a special emphasis on studies on environmental and
climate variability during the Quaternary period, their causes and
consequences. It is expected that the successful applicant will take
part in these already established initiatives in collaboration with
existing staff,.

Iceland is situated at the boundary of air and water masses of tropical
and Arctic origin. Therefore, it has been more strongly impacted by
subtle changes in the ocean/atmospheric circulation than other North
Atlantic landmasses. Consequently, the physical environment in Iceland
is an important laboratory for understanding glacial, atmospheric, and
oceanographic processes. As such, it is essential for identifying and
understanding past climate variability, whose nature and forcing is
vital for assessment of future climate evolution.

Application deadline: Monday, 18 August 2014.

  1. PhD Position
    Meteorology
    Department of Earth Sciences
    Uppsala University
    Uppsala, Sweden

The Department of Earth Sciences at Uppsala University seeks applicants
for a PhD position in meteorology focusing on the atmospheric boundary
layer and sound propagation in cold climates. The ideal starting date
for the position is 1 October 2014. The position is based in Uppsala,
Sweden.

The Arctic and other cold regions have a significant influence on the
global climate. Despite this importance there are still many
uncertainties regarding how meteorological processes work in these
areas. This project will focus on the physical processes in the
atmospheric boundary layer in cold climates and the impact on sound
propagation. The project will be mainly experimental and include
fieldwork. Numerical simulations may also be included.

The successful applicant shall have a university science degree in
meteorology and/or atmospheric physics. Other technical or science
degrees together with experience in meteorology may also be considered.
The successful candidate shall have a solid base in mathematics,
physics, and basic computer skills. Previous experience in
meteorological fieldwork, as well as programming and numerical methods
is considered a merit. The applicant must be prepared to conduct field
work in cold and demanding climates.

Application deadline: Monday, 1 September 2014.

  1. PhD Position
Lake Dynamics on Alaskan North Slope
    Department of Atmospheric Sciences
    University of Alaska Fairbanks
    Fairbanks, Alaska

The Department of Atmospheric Sciences in the College of Natural Science
and Mathematics at the University of Alaska Fairbanks seeks applicants
for a PhD position in the study of lake dynamics on the Alaskan North
Slope. The position will start as early as September 2014 and is based
in Fairbanks, Alaska.

Shallow lakes and ponds may cover up to 40% of the land surface in
Arctic lowland regions. This project examines the extent and dynamics of
bedfast and floating ice lakes in relation to hypothesized interactions
and feedback with permafrost and climate. A combination of remote
sensing, field monitoring, geophysical measurements, experiments, and
physical models will be used to isolate processes, quantify
interactions, and project changes. Project findings will be relevant
locally for subsistence users and for water supply to the petroleum
industry, and globally for scientists studying permafrost thaw and
Arctic climate change.

The successful applicants will also be involved in two other currently
ongoing projects on the North Slope; "Fish CAFE: Response of an Arctic
Freshwater Ecosystem to Climate and Land-use Change in the Fish Creek
Watershed, Beaufort Coastal Plain of Alaska" and "CALON: Towards a
Circum-Arctic Lakes Observation Network."

The candidate will be working on simulating weather and climate
conditions on Alaskan North Slope using a limited area model Weather
Research and Forecasting (WRF) in order to diagnose historical changes
in hydrology of the North Slope and to develop future projections of
lake dynamics for the area.

The candidate should be motivated to work in a multi-disciplinary
environment. The candidate should have a Masters level degree in a
relevant area such as computer science, mathematics, physics, geography,
engineering, or earth sciences. Programming skills and experience with
large atmospheric models, in particular WRF, are important assets. The
candidate must also have a very good standard of written and spoken
English and experience in scientific writing.

The successful candidate will also need to apply to the PhD program of
the Department of Atmospheric Sciences in the College of Natural Science
and Mathematics of the University of Alaska Fairbanks

Review of applications begins: Tuesday, 15 July 2014.

For information about the application process, please see:
http://ffden-2.phys.uaf.edu/atm/atm/Academics/admission.html.

Note: application should include reference to this project.

Applicants selected for interviews via Skype will be notified:
Friday, 1 August 2014.

The position will remain open until a suitable candidate is found.
