  1. EXTENDED DEADLINE: Registration and Abstract Submissions
Second Arctic in Rapid Transition Science Workshop
    21-24 October 2014
    Brest, France

Organizers announce an extended deadline for registration and abstract
submissions for the Second Arctic in Rapid Transition (ART) Science
Workshop entitled "Integrating Spatial and Temporal Scales in the
Changing Arctic System: Towards Future Research Priorities." The
workshop will convene 21-24 October 2014 in Brest, France.

The workshop will provide a forum for discussing the integration of
spatial and temporal scales to better understand the changing Arctic
system as a whole, by including various Arctic research fields such as
physical oceanography, sea-ice, biogeochemical cycles and ecosystems
functioning, marine biodiversity, land-ocean interactions,
ocean-atmosphere exchanges and ocean acidification, paleo-reconstruction
and biological archives, and social sciences.

This international workshop is open to any scientists who share a common
interest in improving our understanding of ongoing and past changes in
the Arctic and developing dialogues on interdisciplinary Arctic research
approaches and future directions. Future Arctic research priorities from
an early career perspective will be elaborated during the workshop, in
parallel sessions, and discussion groups. Results from this workshop
will feed into the Third International Conference on Arctic Research
Planning (ICARP III) meeting in Toyama, Japan in April 2015.

EXTENDED DEADLINE for registration and abstract submission:
Sunday, 31 August 2014.

submissions, go to: http://istas.sciencesconf.org/resource/page/id/2.

  1. Session Announcement
Sea Ice in the Arctic Ocean
Second Arctic in Rapid Transition Science Workshop
    21-24 October 2014
    Brest, France

Organizers announce a sea ice session during the Second Arctic in Rapid
Transition (ART) Science Workshop, which will convene 21-24 October 2014
in Brest, France.

The session will focus on sea ice in the Arctic Ocean: from microphysics
to large-scale dynamics.

The Arctic sea ice cover is undergoing rapid changes, which are most
obvious in the reduction of sea ice extent, area, and thickness observed
in the last years. Reliable forecasting of sea ice conditions both
seasonally and longer term is becoming more and more important with
increasing pressure on the Arctic in the forms of exploitation,
shipping, and fishery activities. However, sea ice remains notoriously
difficult to model due to the complex nature of its physics, the
interactions with atmosphere and ocean, and the various scales involved
from ice crystals to Arctic-wide dynamics.

Session organizers welcome contributions that address the full range of
spatial and temporal scales with focus on, but not limited to the
following topics:

  • The challenge of up-scaling of spot and episodic in situ observations
to large-scale remote sensing products and best methods to compare and
combine datasets with different scales, biases, and errors.
  • Bridging gaps between sea ice observations and modeling.
  • The role of small scale processes in the observed large-scale sea ice
    decline.
  • Interaction of solar radiation and sea ice in a changing Arctic:
timing, variability, and implications for a marine ecosystem and energy
    budget.
  • Between ocean and atmosphere: what drives the observed sea ice changes?
  • The future of the Arctic sea ice cover.

Extended deadline for registration and abstract submission:
Sunday, 31 August 2014.

submissions, go to: http://istas.sciencesconf.org/resource/page/id/2.

  1. Call for Abstracts
    Nordic Reindeer Husbandry Seminar
    Nordic Association of Agricultural Sciences
    20-21 October 2014
    Arctic Centre, University of Lapland
    Rovanieme, Finland

The Reindeer Husbandry Section of the Nordic Association of Agricultural
Sciences announces a call for abstracts for the second seminar in a
series on Nordic reindeer husbandry. The seminar will convene 20-21
October 2014 at the Arctic Centre, University of Lapland in Rovanieme,
Finland.

The goal of the seminar is to promote research on reindeer husbandry
related issues in the Nordic countries. The main focus of the seminar is
on issues related to reindeer herding and land use questions in the
Nordic reindeer herding area. The aim is to discuss reindeer herding and
land use activities at different levels, and to identify needs for
sustainable reindeer husbandry and for sustainable co-management of land
use between different interest groups in the Nordic countries.

Session topics related to reindeer ecology and welfare and cultural and
social questions related to reindeer herding will include:

  • Relations of reindeer herding and other land use activities;
  • Reindeer herding in a changing environment;
  • Predators and reindeer management;
  • Sustainable and profitable reindeer management: challenges and
    opportunities;
  • Social and cultural security and sustainability of reindeer herding
    livelihood; and
  • Future prospects.

Abstract submission deadline: Monday, 18 August 2014.
