Abstract submission for the Fourth International Symposium on Arctic
Research (ISAR-4) and the Third International Conference on Arctic
Research Planning (ICARP III) will close on Monday, 10 November 2014.
These meetings will be held in association with the Arctic Science
Summit Week (ASSW) 2015 in Toyama, Japan. ASSW business meetings will
convene 23-25 April 2015, with ISAR-4 and ICARP III following on 27-30
April 2015.

The combined four-day ISAR-4 and ICARP III Symposium will be composed of
plenary presentations, panel discussions, and parallel sessions
addressing both the ISAR-4 theme, "Rapid Change of the Arctic Climate
System and its Global Influence," and the ICARP III theme, "Integrating
Arctic Research: A Roadmap for the Future."

Abstract submission deadline: Monday, 10 November 2014.

    2015 Polar Marine Science Gordon Research Conference
    15-20 March 2015

The 2015 Polar Marine Science Gordon Research Conference (GRC), entitled
"Polar Shelves and Shelf Break Exchange in Times of Rapid Climate
Warming," will be held in Lucca, Italy from 15-20 March 2015.

The GRCs provide an international forum for the presentation and
discussion of frontier research in the biological, chemical, and
physical sciences, and their related technologies. The guiding principle
of a GRC is to encourage communication and discussion of ideas and new
unpublished results at the very frontier of a particular field of
research, by bringing together outstanding scientists from academia,
industry, and government, ranging from senior experts to PhD students.

With the increasing impacts of reduced sea ice and warming seawater
conditions in both the Arctic and Antarctic, this conference can act as
a forum for potentially transformative discussions for
interdisciplinary, international and compare/contrast evaluation of
polar sciences. In addition, the Gordon Research Seminar (GRS) will
precede the GRC to provide a forum for graduate students and post-docs
to present and exchange new data and cutting edge ideas with experts in
the different polar fields of science.

  1. 26th IUGG Session Announcement and Call for Abstracts
    Numerical Models for Climate Studies and Forecasting at High Latitudes
    22 June - 2 July 2015

Organizers of a session entitled "Numerical Models for Climate Studies
and Forecasting at High Latitudes" announce a call for abstracts. The
session will be held during the 26th General Assembly of the
International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics (IUGG), scheduled for 22
June - 2 July 2015 in Prague, Czech Republic.

Over the last decade there has been an increasing focus on polar weather
and climate modelling. However, at high latitudes there are processes
that are often poorly represented, such as atmospheric boundary layers,
cloud physics, sea ice dynamics and thermodynamics, and snow processes.
Often this is due to a lack of observations of the processes being
modelled. This symposium will focus on the current state of
polar-focused weather, regional, and global climate modelling and
observational efforts aimed at improving polar models.

    Encouraging Networks between Geoscience and Geoscience Education

Organizers announce a call for applications to the Encouraging Networks
between Geoscience and Geoscience Education (ENGAGE) Workshop. It will
be held 18-20 January 2015 in Arlington, Virginia.

Significant advances in both the geosciences and in STEM education have
taken place in recent years, such that early-career professionals face a
different and evolving landscape of what we teach, how we teach, and how
we communicate the broader impacts of our research. Adding urgency to
the task is the projection of an increased need for geoscientists and
professionals with an understanding of geoscience, due to anticipated
retirements from the baby-boomer generation and job growth in
geoscience-related careers. In response, the National Science Foundation
is funding a workshop to bring together early-career researchers to
explore collaborative approaches that leverage advances in both
geoscience disciplines (earth, atmospheric, ocean, and polar sciences)
and in geoscience education. These relationships are critical for two
reasons: (1) to address the foundational educational research needed on
how people learn geoscience content and develop into expert
geoscientists, and (2) to facilitate early career geoscientists in
enhancing the broader impacts of their geoscience research.

The workshop will include a combination of plenary talks, panelist
presentations, group discussions and time for networking and
collaboration. Early career geoscience researchers and discipline based
education researchers (DBERs) will each bring important expertise to the
workshop. The geoscience researchers can provide content specific
instructional challenges and classroom/student access, while DBERs bring
a knowledge of methodologies to study those challenges. Both groups will
have the opportunity to develop new collaborations, with geoscience
researchers gaining an understanding of the DBER process, and ideas for
broadening the impact of their research, while DBERs will gain a better
understanding of content challenges in the geosciences.

This workshop is open to 40 people by application, and travel and
workshop costs will be covered for all selected participants.
