  1. Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory seeks Senior Staff Associate
    Geochemistry
    Palisades, New York

The Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory at Columbia University seeks
applications for a senior staff associate. The position will be based in
Palisades, New York on Columbia's Lamont Campus.

This position will have independent operation of two mass spectrometers
for fully automated measurement of helium isotopes, neon and tritium
(radioactive hydrogen) in water samples at ultra-low concentrations. The
position will work on further development of hardware and software to
improve performance, reliability, and throughput of the systems. The
successful candidate will have oversight of the operation of the
extraction laboratory where the gases measured in the mass spectrometer
laboratory are extracted from water samples, and will participate in
fieldwork including extreme environments such as polar oceans to collect
water samples for measurement of noble gases and other substances.

Candidates must have a Bachelor's degree in experimental physics,
chemistry, or earth science and either 8 years of related professional
experience or a Masters in experimental physics, chemistry, or earth
science and 4 years of related experience.

Application review begins: 27 April 2015.
The position will remain open until filled.

  1. University of Washington seeks Postdoctoral Research Associate
    Oceanography
    Seattle, Washington / Glasgow, Scotland

The University of Washington seeks a postdoctoral research associate to
pursue a novel data synthesis or modeling project within the area of
climate impacts on zooplankton in mid- to high-latitude seas. The
position is for 1.5 years with possible extension, and will be based in
Seattle, Washington but the postdoc is also encouraged to spend part or
all of the duration of the position working with Banas as a visitor at
University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, Scotland.

The project will be part of a new National Science Foundation funded
project centered on application and testing of a new, trait-based model
that predicts copepod community structure and abundance as a function of
environmental variables (temperature and prey availability), in order to
serve as a bridge from oceanographic processes to higher trophic levels.
The postdoc will be co-advised by biophysical modeler Neil Banas and
biological oceanographer Julie Keister. Both physical oceanographers
with an interest in biology and mathematical ecologists with some
knowledge of ocean processes are encouraged to apply. A PhD in a related
field is required.

To apply, submit a detailed curriculum vitae, a cover letter explaining
your research interests and experience, and three references via email
to Neil Banas (neil.banas [at] strath.ac.uk). Please also state your
preference and flexibility regarding an extended visit to University of
Strathclyde and also regarding start date.

Application review begins: 15 April 2015.
The position will be open until filled.

  1. University of Strathclyde seeks PhD Students
    Mathematical Biology / Oceanography
    Glasgow, Scotland, United Kingdom

The University of Strathclyde seeks three PhD students in mathematical
biology or oceanography. The positions are for a duration of three years
and will be based in Glasgow, Scotland, United Kingdom.

The positions will be based in the Department of Mathematics and
Statistics. Project possibilities include biophysical modeling of
circulation and plankton ecology in Arctic fjords, and modeling and data
analysis of copepod life history in the North Pacific across an
Arctic-to-mid-latitude gradient. Depending on the project, students may
be affiliated with the new NSF project "Copepod life history and lipid
strategy in a changing Arctic" (http://neilbanas.com/projects/coltrane)
or other international research efforts. A BSc or MSc in marine science,
physics, mathematics, or a related discipline is required.

To apply, email Neil Banas (neil.banas [at] strath.ac.uk) a curriculum vitae
along with a statement explaining which of the projects you are
interested in, why, and your academic and research experience in related
subjects.

These positions are open until filled.
