The Science and Technical Project Services (S&TPS) Planning Group at
Lockheed Martin seek candidates for the position of Science Planner. This
position is based out of Arlington Virginia.
The S& TPS Planning Group works with the National Science Foundation
(NSF), science and technical project teams, the S&TPS Implementation
Group and other Antarctic Support Contract (ASC) functional areas to
understand project goals, define operational requirements, and minimize
risk for U.S. Antarctic Program (USAP) science and technical events. The
Planning team interfaces directly with NSF staff, including Antarctic
Infrastructure and Logistics managers and Antarctic Sciences program
managers. The Planners analyze science project logistical needs, assist
in the development of project logistical support, manage or assist in
support execution, and modify resource requirements and schedules
through the evolution of a project.
Specific Tasking includes:
- Review of Antarctic science proposals in conjunction with NSF for
appropriate level and method of logistical support; - Working directly with grantees to develop logistical project support
plans from time of project award through the life of the project,
developing Operational Notices for current and upcoming USAP science and
technical events, and identifying potential risks and opportunities; - Developing long-range strategic plans for portfolio of assigned projects;
- Working with the ASC team in Denver to ensure execution of logistical
support plan; - Interacting with the NSF, military, and other agency officials in a
professional and tactful manner; - Deployment to Antarctica for short durations but will be Continental
United States (CONUS) based; - Ensuring that support activities are performed in accordance with all
applicable laws, regulations, standards, and codes imposed by the
Antarctic Treaty and the U.S. Government; and - Other duties as required.
Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree and at least five years
relevant experience; - Familiarity with the conduct of field science;
- Prior experience planning and/or executing science support logistics
in remote environments; - Ability to review scientific proposals for operational requirements
and feasibility; - Strong organizational and communications skills, able to adapt to
changing schedules and priorities; - Strong team player willing to embrace change;
- Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office;
Desired skills: Prior USAP or other polar field support experience
strongly preferred. Prefer individuals with field experience or science
training. Science degree in a field relevant to USAP research or prior
planning/logistical support experience related to USAP research is
preferred. The ideal candidate will have experience in Antarctic or
remote location logistics and science support; project management
and/or field data collection; will be familiar with USAP field, station,
and, ship operations; and have demonstrated ability to work productively
with the science community and other functional groups.
Deployment to Antarctica may be required for this position. The
individual in the position must successfully complete the physical and
dental examinations for deploying to Antarctica. Failure to meet these
requirements may result in withdrawal of employment offer or other
employment action.

Arctic Ecotoxicology

The University of Manitoba's CREATE H2O program seeks candidates for a
PhD student position in Arctic ecotoxicology. This full-time position
has an anticipated start date of winter 2016, depending on candidate
availability, and is based in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.
The successful candidate will work with a multidisciplinary and
multi-institutional team to characterize the inputs of wastewater
contaminants from a range of communities in the Canadian Arctic; develop
lab-based bioassays for marine and sea- ice algae to characterize the
concentration-response and possible recovery following exposure to a
select subset of the commonly observed contaminants; and use in situ
samplers to characterize the response of primary producers in the field
upon actual exposure, as well as to validate lab-derived screening
tools.
The ideal candidate will have a strong track record of working as part
of a diverse team and under sometimes adverse conditions; a foundation
in ecotoxicology, with a preference towards algal toxicity testing; and
a firm grounding in analytical chemistry.
The selected student will be a part of the CREATE H2O program and be
expected to fulfill the requirements of this initiative.

The National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON) seeks candidates for
the position of Field Operations Manager for Domain 18/19. This
full-time position is based in Fairbanks, Alaska.
The Field Operations Manager is responsible for managing all personnel
and activities coordinated from the assigned field office. Field office
activities include preventative and corrective maintenance of scientific
instrumentation, field infrastructure and equipment, and office and
laboratory equipment; field observations; specimen collection, handling,
preparation, and shipment according to NEON scientific protocols.
Personnel management includes selecting, training, scheduling, and
performance management for five to ten regular full-time field
technicians and 20-30 seasonal field technicians according to NEON, Inc.
Policies and Procedures.
The Domain 18/19 Field Operations Manager's primary work location is in
Fairbanks, Alaska. This position supports sites in the Taiga and Tundra
Domains.
Taiga Domain candidate sites are located at the Caribou-Poker Creeks
Research Watershed near Chatanika, Alaska; south of Delta Junction,
Alaska; and near Healy, Alaska.
Tundra Domain candidates sites are located at Toolik Field Station south
of Prudhoe Bay and at Barrow Environmental Observatory. The Taiga and
Tundra domains include most of Alaska.

The Department of the Navy seeks candidates for the position of Arctic
Submarine Program Manager. This full-time permanent position serves as
an Arctic Exercise (ICEX) Program Manager for the Commander Submarine
Force, U. S. Pacific Fleet, Pacific Detachment Arctic Submarine
Laboratory located in the Point Loma Navy Complex in San Diego,
California.
The duties of Arctic Exercise Program Manager may include, but not be
limited to the following:
- Serves as the Arctic Submarine Laboratory Arctic Exercise Program
manager and coordinator; - Prepares, coordinate and monitor present and future strategic issues
of operational readiness of the Submarine Force in the Arctic; - Coordinates plans, procedures, contracts, and milestones, ensure
timely submission of reports, reviewing and editing finished work and
provide expert analysis on issues; - Manages the Arctic Exercise budget to include developing multi-year
budget estimates and submittal of annual Program Objective Memorandum
inputs to the Arctic Submarine Lab Future Year Defense Plan; - Ensures that the Director and senior staff is fully briefed on Arctic
Exercise issues; - Provides advisory and consultative service to other organizations and
agencies participating or supporting the Arctic Exercise Program; and - May be assigned to serve in a major ICEX collateral duty at a remote
ice camp (field operations, coordinating tests, facilitating visitors
and complex evolutions, etc.).
