  1. Student Field Research Opportunity
    Juneau Icefield Research Program
    24 June-19 August 2016
Juneau, Alaska to Atlin, British Columbia, Canada

Organizers of the Juneau Icefield Research Program (JIRP) announce that
applications are now being accepted for the 2016 summer expedition.
Applications are open to senior high school, undergraduate, and
graduate-level students. The expedition will run 24 June to 19 August
2016. Participants will travel from Juneau, Alaska to Atlin, British
Columbia, Canada.

The Juneau Icefield Research Program (JIRP) is an eight-week immersion
in the wilderness of the Juneau Icefield, during which participants
traverse from Juneau, Alaska to Atlin, British Columbia.

The program starts in Juneau where students receive initial mountain
safety training, introductory lectures to prepare them for what they
will see on the icefield, and field trips to nearby glaciers. Students
participate in field research under the guidance of faculty mentors and
will learn about a wide range of disciplines, including glaciology,
geology, climatology, and biology. The science curriculum is augmented
by presentations by professional photographers, film makers, and doctors
specializing in wilderness medicine. At the end of the program, students
communicate their research results to local residents of Atlin during a
public presentation.

JIRP has limited funds for student scholarships, which are now being
accepted. Students will be notified of scholarship award amounts on 1
March. Students who have submitted applications for admission and
scholarships on or before 15 February will be evaluated first,
applications received after that date will be accepted on a rolling
basis.

  1. Summer PhD Field Course
    Advanced Climate Dynamics Course
    8-20 August 2016
    Newfoundland, Canada

Organizers announces a call for applications for a field course
entitled, "Advanced Climate Dynamics Course on the Role of High
Latitudes in Centennial to Millennial Scale Climate Variability." The
course will be held 8-20 August 2016 in Newfoundland, Canada.

The goal of the course is to provide students with empirical, proxy, and
dynamical training within climate science and an understanding the basic
principles and dynamics behind centennial to millennial scale climate
variability and their link to past, present and future changes to high
latitude climate.

The course is taught by several invited guest lecturers coordinated by
the Bjerknes Centre in Bergen, Norway; University of Washington; and
Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Application deadline: 10 March 2016.
