  1. PhD Position Available
    Sea Ice Modeling
    Universite catholique de Louvain
    Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium

The Georges Lemaitre Centre for Earth and Climate Research
(www.uclouvain.be/teclim) / Earth and Life Institute of the Universite
catholique de Louvain seeks candidates for a PhD position in sea ice
modeling. The position is funded for four years and based in
Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium.

The position is associated with the Advanced Prediction in Polar regions
and beyond: Modelling, observing system design and LInkages associated
with ArctiC ClimATE change (APPLICATE) European Union (EU) project.
APPLICATE is a four-year project, expected to be funded by the European
Commission under the Horizon 2020 program, and coordinated by the Alfred
Wegener Institute, Bremerhaven (16 partners), that aims at advancing
abilities to model and predict the Arctic climate system along with its
impacts on the weather and climate in lower latitudes.

The successful candidate will contribute to improve the Louvain-la-Neuve
sea ice model (LIM; www.elic.ucl.ac.be/repomodx/lim/), which is part of
the Nucleus for European Modelling of the Ocean (NEMO;
www.nemo-ocean.eu) platform, by incorporating in this model
subgrid-scale snow thickness and ice floe size distributions together
with a comprehensive representation of lateral ice melting. He/she will
also assess the impact of these changes on the ability of the EC-Earth
general circulation model (www.ec-earth.org), which includes NEMO-LIM,
to predict the Arctic weather and climate on short timescales of one
month to one year.

Required qualifications:

  • Completed MSc or equivalent (five years) in glaciology, physical
oceanography, climatology, physics, applied mathematics or related
    fields;
  • Experience using complex numerical models and good computational
    programming, post-processing, and data management skills;
  • Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills (in English)
necessary to work in a multidisciplinary team environment, author
technical and scientific reports and publications, and deliver
    scientific presentations.

The PhD grant is for four years, starting on 1 November 2016.

Applicants should send a statement of research experience, qualification,
and interest; a complete curriculum vitae including a list of
publications; and two letters of recommendation via e-mail to Thierry
Fichefet (thierry.fichefet [at] uclouvain.be).

Application deadline: this position is open until filled.

  1. Postdoctoral Fellowship Available
    Arctic Climate Modeling
    Universite catholique de Louvain
    Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium

The Georges Lemaitre Centre for Earth and Climate Research (TECLIM;
www.uclouvain.be/teclim) / Earth and Life Institute of the Universite
Catholique de Louvain (UCL), seeks candidates for a postdoctoral
fellowship in Arctic climate modelling. The position is offered for two
years and is based in Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium.

The position will participate in the Advanced Prediction in Polar
regions and beyond: Modelling, observing system design and LInkages
associated with ArctiC ClimATE change (APPLICATE) European Union (EU)
project. APPLICATE is a four-year project, expected to be funded by the
European Commission under the Horizon 2020 program, and coordinated by
the Alfred Wegener Institute, Bremerhaven (16 partners), that aims at
advancing abilities to model and predict the Arctic climate system along
with its impacts on the weather and climate in lower latitudes.

The successful candidate will contribute to a better specification of
the Arctic observing system requirements that will be crucial for major
initiatives such as the Year of Polar Prediction. He/she will first
contribute to analyse the quality and reliability of existing reanalyses
in the Arctic used for the initialization of current operational
forecasts. He/she will then investigate results from the EC-Earth
(www.ec-earth.org) general circulation model in order to better
characterize the type of data, their coverage, and the frequency of
sampling needed to achieve skilful predictions. Finally, he/she will
explore different techniques of initialization in EC-Earth and highlight
their respective impact on prediction skill.

The successful candidate should have a PhD in large-scale climate, sea
ice, or ocean modeling with strong interests for prediction aspects.
Experience in data assimilation in geophysical systems is a plus.
Advanced programming, post-processing, and data managment/analysis skills
are required. He/she should be fluent in English due to the multiple
interactions planned with other APPLICATE partners during the project
and should have demonstrated ability in team working.

The position is offered for two years with a possibility of extension.

Expected starting date: 1 November 2016.
