The American-Scandinavia Foundation (ASF) seeks applicants for funded
research opportunities in Scandinavia for the 2017-2018 academic year.
Please note this opportunity is only available to U.S. Citizens.
The ASF will offer around $300,000 to outstanding American students,
scholars, professionals and artists for study and/or research in
Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway or Sweden. Fellowships of up to
$23,000 are intended to support an academic year-long stay, and priority
is given to students at the graduate level who need to spend time at
foreign academic or research institutions. Grants of up to $5,000 are
considered more suitable for shorter research visits, both on the
graduate or post-doctoral level. Funding is available to candidates in
all fields.
In partnership with Scandinavian Seminar, a not-for-profit organization
sponsoring educational and cultural interaction between Scandinavia and
the United States, The ASF annually provides fellowships totaling
$50.000 to outstanding American students, researchers, and artists for
projects relating to the Arctic and pursued at University of the Arctic
member institutions. The purpose of these fellowships is to increase
knowledge about the Arctic and issues relating to the Circumpolar North.

Operational Arctic Ocean Forecasting

The Norwegian Meteorological Institute is accepting applications for a
Researcher/Scientific programmer. The position is affiliated with the
Ocean and Ice Division, Research and Development Department within the
Norwegian Meteorological Institute. The position is based in Oslo,
Norway.
The Ocean and Ice Division has a strong responsibility in developing and
operating numerical models for forecasting of ocean currents, sea level,
waves and sea-ice. Furthermore, numerical models for forecasting
environmental elements such as oil drift, iceberg, nutrient salts, and
biomass are developed and operated. The work is carried out in
collaboration with national and international partners and is largely
funded externally.
The vacant position is related to the operation, development and
maintenance of operational Arctic ocean models for the Copernicus Arctic
Marine Forecasting Center (ARC-MFC). In ARC-MFC, MET Norway, the Nansen
Center and the Institute for Marine Research have the responsibility for
Arctic monitoring and forecasting as part of the European Copernicus
Marine Environment Monitoring Service.
The successful candidate will be part of the ARC-MFC team and will work
on the operationalization of model upgrades and on new development
within the ARC-MFC model system. It requires good technical and
scientific skills, as well as, the ability to work within a
inter-institutional collaboration.
The successful candidate should have the following qualifications:
- higher education in geophysics, applied mathematics or
equivalent;
- experience in numerical geophysical modeling;
- experience and proven knowledge in applied
mathematical/scientific programming within the Linux environment;
- experience in software development in Fortran;
- good English language skills; and
- both good interpersonal skills and ability to work
independently.
Additional qualifications that are helpful, but not required include:
- experience in working with operational systems; and
- experience in script programming.
The salary will be determined on the governmental salary scales based on
qualifications and experience. The successful candidate will also have
membership in the Norwegian Public Service Pension and will work through
a six months probationary period.
