The University of Maryland announces a call for applications for the
position of Director of the Earth System Science Interdisciplinary
Center (ESSIC). This position is appointed to a renewable, five-year
term and is located in College Park, Maryland.

The successful candidate will have earned a Ph.D. or equivalent in any
of the disciplines essential to understanding the Earth system and must
be a recognized member in the Earth system community, with a strong
record of strategic leadership and a demonstrated ability to work
collaboratively and successfully, nationally and internationally, inside
and beyond academia.

The Director will build co-operative partnerships with departments in a
wide range of colleges, including but not limited to agriculture and
natural resources, engineering, public health, and public policy. In
particular, s/he will encourage and support campus collaborations to
plan for future large-scale funded proposals, as well as efforts to
provide useful knowledge about the Earth system to the non-academic
world. While strengthening existing relationships with NASA and NOAA,
the Director will engage new external partners from universities,
federal agencies, the State of Maryland and the private sector. The
Director will report to the Dean of the College of Computer,
Mathematical and Natural Sciences and will hold a tenured full
professorship in an appropriate department on the campus.

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) announces a call for applications
for the position of North Slope Science Initiative (NSSI) Deputy
Director based in Anchorage, Alaska.

The full-time position of Deputy Director of the NSSI provides senior
level guidance and oversight in the development and implementation of
the NSSI. National and international travel to meetings, conferences,
training, and fieldwork is required for this position, and may include
transportation by jet airlines, small planes, helicopters, and boats.

Specific duties of the Deputy Director of the NSSI include:

  • Providing senior level support to the NSSI Director in directing and
    managing natural resource efforts.
  • Directing activities of the North Slope Science Initiative's Senior
    Staff Committee and Science Technical Advisory Panel.
  • Working across multiple scientific disciplines to provide the best
    information to decision makers.
  • Interpreting scientific research, inventory, and monitoring results
    for resource management needs and objectives.
  • Developing organizational documents, planning and implementing
    budgets, and representing the NSSI at cooperative initiatives.
  • Communicating with government, oil and gas industry, accredited
    institutions, Alaska native organizations, and congressional committees.
