Organizers of the 9th International Conference on Porous Media and
Annual Meeting announce a call for abstracts to a mini-symposium
entitled, "X-ray Micro-tomography of Snow and Porous Ice Media
International Society for Porous Media." The conference will convene
8-11 May 2017 in Rotterdam, Netherlands.
The goal of mini-symposium is to stimulate a discussion on the
similarities between porous ice media and the challenges that x-ray
cryotomography of ice involves, such as cooling setup, resolution,
in-situ studies, and conventional x-ray tubes versus synchrotron
radiation. The mini-symposium also aims to collect research and
applications of x-ray microtomography of porous media containing ice and
snow from different fields.
X-ray micro-tomography (XRT) has become an important non-destructive
technique in material science for optimization of material properties
and improved understanding of the mechanisms that create their
microstructure. It is now increasingly used to study the microstructure
of porous ice and snow with applications to ice in the environment, such
as atmospheric ice particles, snow and polar firn, sea ice, frozen soil,
and hydrate-ice media. Ice microstructure is also relevant to the food
industry. All fields share challenges during XRT measurements including
proper sample cooling during imaging; trade-off between spatial
resolution and sample sizes to observe crystal structure; upscaling of
properties to larger samples; enhancement of contrast between ice and
fat/oil and impurities; and in-situ studies of ice freezing and
metamorphosis. Over the past two decades, synchrotron-based XRT has
opened new possibilities to perform studies at high spatial and temporal
resolution and enhance contrast.
Abstracts related to model studies motivated by XRT are welcome at this
conference.
