The organizers of POLAR2018 announce a call for session proposals for
the Open Science Conference entitled, "Where the Poles Meet." The
POLAR2018 event will be 19-23 June 2018 in Davos, Switzerland.

The Open Science Conference is a joint event held by Scientific
Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR) and the International Arctic
Science Committee (IASC). This Open Science Meeting will be hosted by
the Swiss Federal Institute of Forest, Snow, and Landscape Research
under the patronage of the Swiss Committee on Polar and High Altitude
Research. Swiss Federal Institute of Forest, Snow, and Landscape
Research will also be hosting the XXXV SCAR Biennial Meetings and the
Arctic Science Summit Week (ASSW) and IASC Business Meetings in
conjunction with the SCAR/IASC Open Science Conference. All meetings
will be part of POLAR2018 and convene 15-26 June 2018 in Davos,
Switzerland.

Organizers of the Open Science Conference are accepting proposals for
sessions that cover a broad range of topics across the spectrum of Polar
and high altitude research, such as, but not limited to, climate,
glaciology, social and human sciences, ice sheets, atmospheric sciences,
oceanography, biology, astronomy, geology, economic aspects, sustainable
development, technology, and education. Session topics that encapsulate
research conducted in both the Arctic and Antarctic are encouraged.

The conference will include oral and poster sessions, as well as
e-poster sessions with a mini-oral session.

Tasks of the conveners include:

  • Soliciting submissions for their session;
  • Reviewing abstracts submitted for their session;
  • Working with the International Scientific Organizing Committee to
    arrange the program of their session, including oral and poster
    presentations; and
  • Chairing the session.

Organizers welcome early career scientists and indigenous peoples as
conveners and encourage diversity regarding conveners' nationalities and
gender.

Organizers of the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR)
International Biology Symposium announce a call for application for
travel grants. This meeting, held every four years, will convene 10-14
July 2017 in Leuven, Belgium.

The theme of the XII SCAR International Biology Symposium will be "Scale
Matters." This symposium will focus on understanding biological
distribution, trends, adaptation, and processes in the marine and
terrestrial realm, including human biology. Special attention will be
paid to multidisciplinary research and how combining insight from
different fields can help the understanding of biology in this region.
An important aspect of this symposium will focus on the societal impact
of Antarctic biological sciences and how this can be communicated, not
only to the general public, and policy makers.

Applications for partial travel support, including airfare and meeting
registration, are available to students, post-doctoral researchers, and
other scientists at U.S. institutions. Preference will be given to early
career investigators, including students and those within five years of
completing a PhD. Individuals from underrepresented groups in the
sciences are encouraged to apply. Funding will be provided by the
National Science Foundation (NSF) Division of Polar Programs.

Eligibility requirements for funding include:

  • Employment by/enrollment in a U.S. institution,
  • Must be presenting a talk or poster at the Biology Symposium, and
  • Must have access to current NSF grants with travel funds for meetings.

Reimbursement of funds will require submission of receipts for air
travel purchased through a U.S.-flag carrier (no exceptions) and meeting
registration. Travel advances are not possible, and credit card
statements are not valid as receipts.

    European Geosciences Union General Assembly 2017

    23-28 April 2017

Organizers of the "Freshwater in the Arctic and Sub-Arctic Seas" session
announce a call for session proposals. This session is part of the 2017
European Geosciences Union (EGU) General Assembly conference that will
convene 23-28 April 2017 in Vienna Austria.

Session description: Understanding processes affecting the supply,
transport, accumulation and release of the various sources of freshwater
in the Arctic is important as they have significant effects on regional
sea-ice processes, ocean stratification, nutrient distribution, and
ocean acidification. Arctic freshwater has the potential to modulate
climate on both regional and global scales. This includes the Atlantic
meridional overturning circulation, atmospheric Arctic-mid-latitude
linkages, release of additional greenhouse gases from thawing subsea
permafrost, and advection of waters corrosive to calcium carbonate to
the North Atlantic.

Organizers welcome contributions from observers and modelers on topics
including:

  • Sources of freshwater to the Arctic under a changing climate;
  • The Arctic freshwater budget and storage anomalies;
  • Freshwater tracers and propagation of anomalies;
  • Coherence between different time series of freshwater observations;
  • The fate of freshwater exported from the Arctic;
  • Hydrological feedbacks between the liquid ocean, the cryosphere, and
    the atmosphere; and
  • Effects of freshwater variability on biogeochemistry and ecosystems.

Financial support may be available and must be applied for when
submitting an abstract, if submitted prior to the travel support
deadline.

Application for financial support deadline: 1 December 2016.

Abstract submission deadline: 11 January 2017.

Early registration deadline: 16 March 2017.
