  1. Masters and PhD Opportunities
    Earth Sciences and Environmental Sustainability
    Northern Arizona University
    Flagstaff, Arizona

The School of Earth Sciences and Environmental Sustainability (SESES) at
Northern Arizona University (NAU) announces a call for applications for
Masters and PhD positions for NSF-funded projects on climate and
environmental variability in Alaska based on proxy climate evidence from
lake sediments. The positions will be based at NAU in Flagstaff,
Arizona, with possible travel to field sites in northern and southern
Alaska.

In southern Alaska, volcanic ash layers and annually laminated sediment
provide the basis for precise geochronology. These new records build on
a growing regional and global networks of proxy climate records to
improve the understanding of how shifts in the mean state of climate
during the Holocene were associated with changes in north Pacific and
Arctic climate variability.

SESES is seeking a graduate student (MS or PhD) to join their project
studying glacier-hydrology-limnology linkages and how those links relate
to the changing Arctic system. The successful candidate will be trained
in a wide range of paleolimnological and geochemical techniques and will
develop new paleoclimate records focusing on postglacial hydroclimatic
variability.

Degree options include:
- MS Geology or MS Environmental Sciences and Policy Paleoenvironments
- PhD Earth Sciences and Environmental Sustainability Climate and
Environmental Change

Highly qualified incoming PhD students will be considered for NAU's
Presidential Fellowship.

Application deadline: 15 January 2017.

  1. Masters and PhD Opportunities
    Institute of Arctic Biology
    University of Alaska Fairbanks
    Fairbanks, Alaska

The Institute of Arctic Biology (IAB) at the University of Alaska
Fairbanks (UAF) announces a call for applications for two graduate
student positions for a NSF-funded project on shrub feedbacks to carbon
and nitrogen cycling in Arctic tundra. These positions will be located
at UAF in Fairbanks, Alaska.

In the Arctic, a widespread shift from tundra to deciduous
shrub-dominated vegetation appears to be underway, which could have
profound implications for regional climate, carbon balance, and
biogeochemical cycling. Because much of the world's soil carbon is
stored in Arctic and boreal regions, changes in the Arctic's carbon
budget may have strong feedback to global climate. Because
biogeochemical carbon and nitrogen cycles are linked tightly in Arctic
ecosystems and plant production is strongly nitrogen-limited, shrubs
affect soil carbon through their effects on near-surface soil nitrogen.

One graduate student opportunity (MS or PhD) will focus on shrub growth
and impacts on nitrogen uptake and near surface nitrogen cycling. A
second graduate student opportunity (MS) will focus on characterizing
shrub impacts via nitrogen fixation associated with Siberian alder.

The successful candidates will have an opportunity to develop their own
research questions within the overall framework of the project.

Research sites will be accessed from the Toolik Field Station in
northern Alaska. Students will be supported through a combination of
research assistantships and teaching assistantships. Fieldwork will
begin in the summer of 2017 and coursework in the fall of 2017.

Applicants must also apply for graduate study to the Department of
Biology and Wildlife at UAF.

Application deadline: 15 January 2017.

Position start date: 1 June 2017.

  1. Postdoctoral Position Available
    Arctic Marine Ecology
    Laval University (Universite Laval)
    Quebec City, Quebec, Canada

Laval University announces a call for applications for a postdoctoral
position in Arctic marine ecology. This full-time, 24-month position
will be funded from January 2017 to December 2018 and be based at the
Laval University in Quebec City, Quebec, Canada.

This position is open to scientists from diverse backgrounds including
marine ecology, biological oceanography, and fisheries science.
Applicants must have completed their PhD by the position start date.
Prior experience with Arctic ecosystem research is desirable. The
successful applicant must be an autonomous researcher adept at working
with multiple researchers with varying backgrounds. Strong organization,
communication, and writing skills are required.

Additional desired skills include:

  • Strong statistical analysis skills,
  • Ability to manage a budget,
  • Ability to coordinate laboratories analyses, and
  • Willingness to take part in fieldwork for up to six weeks at the time.

The project associated with this position was initiated in 2015 and is a
research partnership among the W. Garfield Weston Foundation, Parks
Canada, ArcticNet, and Quebec-Ocean. The project objective is to study
the marine ecosystems of the Kitikmeot, the southern part of the
Canadian Arctic Archipelago.

Areas of research include:

  • Zooplankton ecology and physiology,
  • Ichthyoplankton assemblages and larval fish ecology,
  • Ecological studies of benthic and/or pelagic fish, and
  • Hydroacoustic studies of zooplankton and/or fish.

Duties will include:

  • Annual sampling of benthos, zooplankton, ichthyoplankton, and fish
    from the research icebreaker Canadian Coast Guard Ship (CCGS) Amundsen;
  • Acoustic surveys documenting fish and zooplankton biomasses;
  • Recovery and redeployment of two oceanographic moorings;
  • Surveys of marine mammals and birds by Inuit wildlife observers; and
  • Seminars at scientific conferences and outreach activities.

This position is open to U.S. and non-U.S. applicants and will be
supervised by Louis Fortier, Canada Research Chair on the response of
Arctic marine ecosystems to climate change.

Applications, including a cover letter that highlights skills and
abilities in areas relevant to this position, a curriculum vitae, up to
three representative publications, and contact information of three
references, should be submitted via email to Caroline Bouchard
(Caroline.Bouchard [at] qo.ulaval.ca).

Application deadline: 15 December 2016.
