The Department of Meteorology at Stockholm University announces a call
for applications for two research positions in Arctic meteorology. These
position, within two interlinked four-year projects, will be located at
the Stockholm University in Stockholm, Sweden.
These positions are within interlinked projects funded by the European
Commission's Horizon 202 programs: the Advanced Prediction in Polar
regions and beyond: modelling, observing system design and LInkages
associated with a Changing Arctic climate (APPLICATE) and the INTegrated
Arctic Observing System (INTAROS).
The APPLICATE project is to investigate ways to improve weather and
climate prediction in the face of a rapidly changing Arctic. The project
concerns improving model parameterizations of Arctic processes with a
special emphasis on clouds, boundary-layers, and the interaction at the
ocean/sea-ice/atmosphere interfaces. The work will be done using
observations and implementing theoretical insights in a newly developed
coupled single-column model, as well as in global coupled simulations on
both weather and climate timescales.
INTAROS aims to design an integrated and interdisciplinary sustainable
pan-Arctic observation system. This research position targets the
atmosphere and, in particular, characterizing and understanding the
vertical structure of the lower atmosphere over the Arctic Ocean. In the
intial phase the focus will be on investigating existing operational and
scientific databases, especially focusing on space-borne observations,
identifying observational gaps, and suggesting actions. Later the
successful applicant may become involved in designing a quasi-autonomous
atmospheric observatory on the Swedish icebreaker Oden.
Applicants are expected to hold a Swedish doctoral degree or an
equivalent degree from another country, in meteorology, oceanography,
climate science, or related fields, or in computer science, statistics,
or related fields. For the APPLICATE position, experience in analyzing
model results and/or model development analysis will be considered an
advantage. For the INTAROS position, previous experience with analysis
of Arctic weather and climate will be considered an advantage.
Applicants should have exceptional knowledge of oral and written
English. Doctoral candidates may apply for the position if they expect
to receive the PhD degree before the starting date of the position.

The Faculty of Science and Technology at the University of Tormso (UiT)
Arctic University of Norway announce a call for applications for a PhD
position studying physical oceanography/hydro-acoustics. This four-year
appointment will be located in Tromso, Norway.
The successful candidate will participate in the faculty's organized
research training and the PhD project shall be completed during the
period of employment. The successful candidate will study short- and
long-term natural evolution of gas releases of gas-hydrated seabed
environments by investigating the interactions between ocean and seabed
environments. Observations will include 3D numerical modeling of the
oceanographic and thermogenic and biogenic gas expulsion system. Model
predictions of long-term evolution of the environmental changes will be
cross-checked against existing time records. Oceanographic, geochemical,
and acoustic data sets from long-term (greater than two years) seafloor
observatory stations have been already collected along the western
Svalbard margin and northwestern Barents Sea. This project will start on
a combination of geochemistry and physical oceanography data with
further data collection on research cruises. The successful candidate
will analyze and compare time series of hydro-acoustic (echosounder,
multibeam, and hydrophone) and ocean chemistry data to estimate the
variability and quantity of biogenic and thermogenic methane releases
from the seabed and identify earlier signs of these release and impacts.
The successful candidate will have a Master's degree in physical
oceanography or related field. Experience in numerical modeling and use
of hydro-acoustics, time series analyses, computing skills, and
knowledge of Matlab programming will be an asset. This position will
involve multiple research cruises to the Arctic Ocean and Barents Sea,
where a variety of field sampling techniques and novel oceanographic
underwater technologies will be learned.
This position is associated with the Norwegian Research Council Center
of Excellence Center for Arctic Gas Hydrate, Climate, and Environment
(CAGE) at the Department of Geosciences.

PhD project.
