Organizers announce a final call for applications and registration for
the 2017 Polar Marine Science Gordon Research Conference (GRC) entitled
"Understanding Ecosystem Change through Time Series Observations,
Technological Advances, and Biophysical Coupled Modeling." This
conference will convene 26-31 March 2017 in Ventura, California.

The conference will bring together national and international scientist
in Arctic and Antarctic marine research across all career levels to
discuss new findings and uncertainties associated with marine time
series data, use of developing technology for collecting those
observations, and to identify successes and challenges emerging from
time series observations and biophysical modeling that can be used to
accurately forecast future ecosystem response.

Interested persons must apply to participate in the conference. Refer to
the application instructions on the website for more details.

Prior to the GRC, a Polar Gordon Research Seminar (GRS) entitled
"Advancing the Physical-Biological Understanding of Polar Marine
Ecosystems through Innovative Technology" will convene 25-26 March 2017
to serve as a forum for early career scientists to present and exchange
new data and cutting-edge ideas with experts in different fields of
polar science related to emerging technologies.

Those wanting to attend both, the seminar and conference, must apply to
each separately.

    Sea Level Conference

The World Climate Research Program (WCRP) and Intergovernmental
Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of the United Nations Educational,
Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) announce a call for
abstracts for the WCRP/IOC Sea Level Conference. This conference will
convene 10-14 July 2017 in New York, New York.

The conference is hosted by The Earth Institute at Columbia University
and has the theme "Regional Sea Level Changes and Coastal Impacts."
Participants will address sea level research that pertain to the
existing challenges in describing and predicting regional sea level
changes, and in quantifying the intrinsic uncertainties. The conference
follows 11 years after the first WCRP sea level conference (Paris,
2006), and three years after the last Assessment Report of the
Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). It will provide a
comprehensive summary of the state of worldwide climate-related large
scale sea level research.

This conference will consist of plenary sessions followed by a poster
session. In the evenings, there will be "think-tanks" that will focus on
new science frontiers and activities.

    5th International Symposium on Arctic Research
    15-18 January 2018
    Tokyo, Japan

Organizers of the 5th International Symposium on Arctic Research
(ISAR-5) announce a call for special session proposals. This symposium
is entitled "The Changing Arctic and its Regional to Global Impact: From
Information to Knowledge and Action." The symposium will convene 15-18
January 2018 in Tokyo, Japan.

This symposium will be comprised of discussions on environmental changes
in the Arctic and their regional and global implications and seeks
additional international scientific collaboration in this area by
gathering, synthesizing, and sharing information related to these
changes occurring in the Arctic. Arctic change has impacts on the global
climate, as well as ecosystems and human societies in higher-middle
latitudes. A better understanding of these processes is needed so that
improved information can be given to society and stakeholders,
particularly decision makers.

Special emphasis will be placed on the fields of the social sciences and
humanities, which have not been included in previous ISARs.

The symposium will consist of plenary, general, and special sessions, as
well as poster sessions. Special sessions are inter-disciplinary and
solicited from participants.

The general sessions include the fields of:

  • Atmosphere;
  • Ocean and sea ice;
  • Rivers, lakes, permafrost, and snow cover;
  • Ice sheets, glaciers, and ice cores;
  • Terrestrial ecosystems;
  • Marine ecosystems;
  • Geospace;
  • Policies and economy; and
  • Social and cultural dimensions.
