Ranking Oil, Gas, and Mining Companies on Indigenous Rights in the
Arctic
Arran Lule Sami Center
The Arran Lule Sami Center announces the release of a report titled
"Ranking Oil, Gas, and Mining Companies on Indigenous Rights in the
Arctic." This report, authored by Indra Overland, is a product of the
project "Indigenous Peoples and Resource Extraction in the Arctic:
Evaluating Ethical Guidelines" at the Arran Lule Sami Centre in
Ajluokta/Drag, Norway.
In the report, a newly developed ranking system evaluates the public
commitments, formalized procedures, and institutional arrangements of
resource-extraction companies for handling indigenous rights in the
Arctic. The purpose of the ranking is to support norm formation and
contribute to improving the performance of companies on indigenous
rights by highlighting which, and to what extent, companies have made a
public commitment to indigenous rights.
The ranking includes 92 oil, gas, and mining companies involved in
onshore resource extraction above the Arctic Circle and indicates that
60% of these companies are poorly prepared to respect indigenous rights.
Companies operating in the Canadian and U.S. Arctic do better overall in
the ranking than their counterparts operating in the Asian and European
Arctic. Petroleum companies have significantly better scores than mining
companies, although the best performer is a mining company.
The full report is available online at no cost.
