This workshop will address the issues of hydrological research in cold
regions, both in fundamental scientific and applied aspects, including
the studies of snow, glaciers, permafrost, frozen ground, groundwater,
seasonally frozen rivers, and lakes.

Extended abstract submission deadline: Wednesday, 15 March 2017.

The workshop program will include scientific sessions, fieldtrips to
research sites, local excursions, and a cruise on the Lena River.

Abstract are encouraged from research topics including:

  • Observational evidence of change in coupled permafrost-hydrology
    systems;
  • Modeling studies representing landscape evolution, dynamics of water
    storages, and permafrost degradation;
  • Impacts of permafrost hydrology changes on local communities; and
  • Abstracts regarding hydrology, water resources, and water engineering
    in snow-dominated and permafrost regions.

The workshop will address observational evidence of change in coupled
snow-frozen ground-hydrology-ecology system; present state and future
projections of local, regional, and pan-Arctic and Antarctic hydrology;
modelling studies representing landscape evolution, dynamics of water
storage, and permafrost degradation; and impacts of cold-region
hydrology changes on ecology and local communities.

This workshop is accepting applications for full funding of travel,
lodging, and meals for early career researchers based in the United
Kingdom (U.K.) and Russia.

Application deadline: Sunday, 26 March 2017.

    Improved Satellite Retrievals of Sea-ice Concentration and Sea-ice
    Thickness for Climate Applications
    9-11 October 2017
    Hamburg, Germany

This workshop will discuss and outline the most promising opportunities
and best practices in the use of existing and future satellite sensors
for the remote sensing of sea-ice concentration and thickness, and the
use of such data in large-scale modeling applications.

A call for workshop contributions is planned for April 2017.

Scope of Workshop:

New sensors and algorithms developed over the past few years have
allowed for significant progress in the ability to estimate sea-ice
concentration and sea-ice thickness from space. In addition to existing
sensors such as CryoSat-2, SMOS, AMSR2, and ASCAT, the launch of new
sensors like ICESat-2 and additional Sentinels will further widen the
capabilities to more accurately measure the state of sea ice from
satellites.

Financial support for travel and accommodations may be available for
some participants. Contact organizers for more information.
