The Glaciology section at the Alfred Wegener Institute Helmholtz Center
for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) invite applications for a PhD
researcher in Ocean Ice Modeling. This full-time three-year position
will be located in Bremerhaven, Germany.

The successful candidate will develop a coupled ocean-ice shelf-ice
sheet model for the Greenland Ice Sheet and adjacent ocean based on the
Finite Element Sea ice Ocean Model (FESOM) ocean model and the Ice Sheet
System Model (ISSM). The project will focus on the seasonal to
interannual basal melt rate changes and their impact on the coupled ice
sheet ocean system in order to forecast the contribution of the area to
global sea level change.

Position requirements include a strong background in numerical ice flow
modeling and mathematics, experience with finite elements and numerical
methods on unstructured grids, and experience with C/C++ programming and
using Unix/Linux computer environments.

The Canadian Cryospheric Information Network (CCIN) at the University of
Waterloo is seeking a web developer for polar data management. This
full-time, fixed-term position is available immediately and continues
through March 2018, with continuation possible depending on performance
and availability of funds. The position will be located in Waterloo,
Ontario, Canada.

This position is until filled.

Applications will be reviewed as they are received and interviews are
expected to take place during June.

The CCIN is a primary source for data and information on snow, ice, and
cold regions and manages the Polar Data Catalogue (PDC), a searchable
archive of data and information generated by Arctic and Antarctic
researchers from ArcticNet, Canada's Northern Contaminants Program, the
Canadian High Arctic Research Station of Polar Knowledge Canada, the
Nunavut General Monitoring Plan, and other organizations.

Duties of this position include:

  • Work with the CCIN team to understand the organization and the polar
    data community;
  • Develop, maintain, and upgrade Java/Spring-based web applications to
    support research data management;
  • Audit and optimize web configurations to enhance performance,
    functionality, and security;
  • Manage public web services and data sharing infrastructure;
  • Design and develop in PostgreSQL, including data modeling and query
    optimization, to support the web applications;
  • Administer master-slave database infrastructure, including
    configuration, backup, and monitoring database-related services;
  • Write and maintain technical documentation; and
  • Attend and contribute to regular CCIN team meetings.

The successful candidate will have experience in full-stack web
development and administration, take initiative to identify and respond
to the evolving needs of the organization, and integrate best security
practices into all aspects of their work.

Qualification for this position include:

  • At minimum, a Bachelor's degree in computer/information science,
    geography/Geographic Information System (GIS), natural or mathematical
    sciences, or equivalent;
  • A minimum of two years of experience in a web development role;
  • Proactive, innovative, and eager approach to problem solving; and
  • A desire to continue learning new technologies and practices.
