The ARCUS Arctic Research Seminar Series brings some of the leading Arctic researchers to Washington, D.C. to share the latest findings and what they mean for decision-making. These seminars will be of interest to federal agency officials, congressional staff, non-governmental organizations, associations, and the public.
This seminar titled "The U.S. Arctic Observing Network - Mobilizing Interagency Observing Actions in an Era of Rapid Change" will be presented by Sandra Starkweather and will discuss the capabilities of the new Arctic Observing Network (U.S. AON) initiative and how they are being mobilized.
Sandra Starkweather is the Executive Director for the U.S. Arctic Observing Network, a NOAA funded position created to advance the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and U.S. agency participation in partnered Arctic observing activities and work towards a framework concept for an interagency U.S. AON. Starkweather has a joint background in engineering (energy systems, renewables, conservation), earth science (Arctic climatology), and science policy. She has experience in consulting engineering, university research, project management, and planning. She has spent twelve years traveling to and from Greenland to participate in or support Arctic field research. Sandy has combined her experiences to advance coordination among independently funded, flagship Arctic observatories for the International Arctic Systems for Observing the Atmosphere (IASOA) consortium and to advance the implementation of the U.S. Interagency Arctic Research Policy Committee's (IARPC) Five Year Plan for Arctic Research. She maintains a strong interest in improving the effectiveness of the Arctic research enterprise, particularly in situ observational research, through building stronger collaborations among all parties who benefit from sustained Arctic observing.
This event is a brown-bag lunch that will be held in the ARCUS D.C. office (1201 New York Avenue, NW Washington D.C. Fourth Floor). Cookies and beverages will be provided.
A live webinar is also available to those unable to attend in person. Instructions for accessing the event online will be sent to webinar registrants prior to the event.
