The Norwegian Polar Institute invites applications for the position of Research Scientist in sea ice geophysics with a focus on numerical modeling and data analysis. This permanent position will be located in Tromso, Norway.
The primary focus of the position will be on Arctic sea ice, especially within the regions around Svalbard, in Fram Strait, the Barents Sea, and the European sector of the Arctic Basin. Work on Antarctic sea ice could also be possible in the future. Participation in polar field campaigns is expected.
The successful candidate must hold a completed PhD in sea ice research, geophysics, mathematics, oceanography, or another relevant field. Researchers must have a strong scientific understanding of Arctic sea ice processes, especially mass and surface energy balance and experience with analysis of corresponding observational data. Experience with 1D thermodynamic sea ice models, regional ice-ocean modeling, sea ice process modeling, and time series analysis is required. Proven numerical skills are essential.
Communication skills in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language are an asset. The institute covers Norwegian courses. Non-Norwegian applicants are expected to learn Norwegian within a reasonable time.
