The National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) within the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) invite applications for the Senior Executive Service (SES) position of Science and Research Director, Alaska Region. This full-time, permanent positon will be based in Juneau, Alaska or Seattle, Washington.
The successful candidate will lead programs in research areas that may be applied to fishery and protected species conservation and management habitat conservation and restorations, gear technology, aquaculture, environmental and ecosystem analysis, marine quality and safety, fishery development, and other complex marine resource issues identified by industry, public concern, or other regional, national, or international agencies. The Director also leads research in landside facilities and oversees research carried out onboard vessels at sea.
The Director is responsible for the following:
- Biological and oceanographic surveys and studies to monitor, assess, and predict the abundance and availability of living marine resources, including research to improve detection and monitoring;
- Studies to determine the quality and abundance of living marine resources and their natural ecosystems, and relationships between the quality and abundance of living marine resources and their natural ecosystems;
- Studies of the chemical, physical, and ecological interactions between living marine resources and environmental contaminants, particularly those that may produce long-term damage;
- Studies of community resilience and the socio-economic dimensions of marine resource management; and
- Research into anthropogenic impacts on marine resources, and methods to mitigate these impacts (e.g., bycatch reduction).
