Two Arctic community open meetings will convene during the 2017 American Geophysical Union (AGU) Fall Meeting will be held 11-15 December 2017 in New Orleans, Louisiana. These meetings, open to all AGU Fall Meeting attendees, will be located on the second floor of the Hampton Inn and Suites New Orleans - Convention Center hotel (1201 Convention Center Blvd., New Orleans, Louisiana, 70130).
Organizers invite attendance at the following two side meeting:
Meeting: Review of the Principles for the Conduct of Research in the North AGU Listening Session hosted by the Interagency Arctic Research Policy Committee (IARPC)
Meeting Date/Time: Thursday, 14 December 2017, 3:00-4:00 p.m. CST
Meeting Location: Riverside I, Hampton Inn and Suites New Orleans - Convention Center hotel
The Interagency Arctic Research Policy Committee (IARPC) invites the research community to attend a listening session and provide comments on how best to revise and strengthen the Principles for the Conduct of Research in the Arctic, ensure their wide dissemination, and how best to put them into practice.
The Principles Revision Working Group of IARPC is seeking input from all stakeholders, including the research community, to revise and update the Principles. The Working Group would like to hear from the research community on their experiences with communities and how best to improve engagement across all stages of research when conducting studies in the Arctic.
The update will focus on communicating clearly the Principles for community engagement by Arctic researchers and including language that describes partnerships and collaborations with Indigenous scholars, enhanced community-based observations, fostering community-based participatory research, and the integral contributions of Indigenous knowledge in the co-production and dissemination of knowledge.
Remote attendance options will be available. Those unable to attend the listening session in person or remotely, can submit comments via email to iarpcprinciples [at] nsf.gov.

Meeting: Wintertime Urban Pollution Under Dark Conditions
Meeting Date/Time: Friday, 15 December 2017, 12:30-1:30 p.m. CST
Meeting Location: Riverside III, Hampton Inn and Suites New Orleans - Convention Center hotel
Organizers invite attendance at an open meeting to discuss wintertime urban pollution under dark conditions.
The point of the meeting is to discuss fundamental knowledge gaps in understanding of atmospheric chemical mechanisms occurring under cold and dark conditions. These gaps are exacerbated by lack of knowledge of emissions and by wintertime meteorology, which causes stagnation and hinders mixing between cleaner background and polluted air masses. In addition, there are limited measurements in regions with sub-freezing temperatures and low to absent photochemistry. Specific questions that have been identified are: What is the role of secondary chemistry involving sulfur, nitrogen, and organics in increasing fine particulate pollution under cold and dark conditions? What are the key wintertime emission sources, and how do these emissions impact processing of pollution? How does lack of mixing of background, ozone-rich air with urban polluted air affect the urban and downwind pollutant transformation and deposition?
To address these questions, conveners are organizing a workshop to be held in May 2018 in Fairbanks, Alaska to discuss outstanding questions and plan a future measurement campaign to answer these questions.
This workshop and project are a part of the air Pollution in the Arctic: Climate, Environment and Societies (PACES) project, an activity sponsored by the International Global Atmospheric Chemistry Project (IGAC) and the International Arctic Science Committee (IASC) under working group 2, which focuses on the interaction between Arctic air pollution and Arctic societies.
