The Lougheed and Tweedie labs at the University of Texas at El Paso invite applications for two PhD research assistantships in Arctic coastal processes. These positions will begin during the summer of 2018 and will be located at the University of Texas at El Paso in El Paso, Texas.

Two separate positions are available and students will be expected to enroll in either the Ecology and Evolutionary Biology (EEB) (https://science.utep.edu/eeb/) or Environmental Science and Engineering (ESE) (https://science.utep.edu/ese/) doctoral programs. One position will focus on carbon flux within and from aquatic sites and the second will focus on the causes and consequences of coastal erosion and land cover change on land-aquatic connections.

Depending on the project, a background in aquatic chemistry or remote sensing would be beneficial, with a degree in chemistry, biology, environmental science, or a closely related field preferred. Students will participate in all aspects of the project, from field work in the Arctic to publication of findings.

These positions are part of an interdisciplinary team funded by the National Science Foundation to study linkages between terrestrial and aquatic processes within Beaufort Sea lagoons at a newly established Arctic Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) site (https://lternet.edu/node/84426)

Applicants are expected to have a strong academic background, show evidence of independent work in the field and/or lab, and demonstrate a capacity to contribute to a collaborative research environment.

For more information, email a statement of interest/background and a copy of a curriculum vitae to Vanessa Lougheed (vlougheed [at] utep.edu) and Craig Tweedie (ctweedie [at] utep.edu).

Note that the application deadline for our doctoral programs in EEB and ESE is February 1, 2018.
