The International Summer School at the University of Oslo (UiO) invite applications for the summer Masters course titled A Changing Arctic. This course will convene 23 June-3 August 2018 at the University of Oslo Blindern Campus in Oslo, Norway.
This course aims to enhance knowledge and understanding of the Arctic natural habitat, including its changes over time and plausible future trajectories, and to increase awareness about how those changes affect legal developments, political tensions, and international governance challenges. Students will learn about the uncertainties in scientific data and models and will be trained in the use of analytical tools and models that help to describe and diagnose governance challenges and to identify and assess response options. The course provides understanding of international law rules governing the Arctic region, with particular focus on the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.
The course consists of a series of lectures by UiO staff and external guests covering a wealth of issues related to the Arctic domain as well as excursions and public outreach.
A completed Bachelor's degree or a period of study comparable with a Norwegian Bachelor's degree from a recognized institution is required for this course. A related degree in law, social sciences, or natural sciences will be an advantage, but students with other bachelor degrees can apply. Documented professional experience within Arctic-related areas may also qualify applicants even if their academic background does not match the course profile. Applicants who are not native speakers of English must document their proficiency in English.
