George Washington University invites applications for a graduate student position in Arctic urban development. This part-time, two-year program will be located in Washington, D.C.
The successful candidate would work on an on-going research project to develop an Arctic Urban Sustainability Index. The project examines economic, environmental, social, governance, and planning aspects of urban development in the Arctic. The successful candidate would define and pursue his or her specific interests within the parameters of the project.
The overall project team is multi-disciplinary and multi-national with partners at the University of Virginia, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the University of Northern Iowa, and the University of Alaska, as well as numerous foreign partners in Canada, Scandinavia, and Russia.
Qualifications for this position include:
- A bachelor’s degree with an excellent academic record;
- Proven research abilities and close affinity with the research topic;
- Willingness to conduct fieldwork and interviews in the Arctic;
- Excellent command of English and proven academic writing skills; and
- Proficiency in Russian or another Arctic language is desired, but not required.
This program would provide two years of tuition and a modest stipend for living expenses. Available funding for this position would be sufficient to finish a Master’s degree in International Affairs, and it may be possible to find additional funding for a PhD program through the university.
