The University Centre in Svalbard invites applications for a PhD position in physical oceanography. This four-year position will be located in Longyearbyen, Svalbard, Norway.

This project will use moored instruments, advanced technology, and autonomous platforms to sample environmental parameters to address the lateral and vertical mixing processes at high latitudes, in the marginal ice zone, and in ocean front systems. The study will concentrate on two sites: north of Svalbard, with particular focus on the warm Atlantic boundary current, and the central Barents Sea, with particular focus on intruding Atlantic water and the thermohaline polar front between Atlantic water and Arctic water.

The successful candidate will investigate vorticity dynamics along continental slopes (continental shelf waves) and in troughs leading into the Barents Sea from the northern and southern rim. Water mass exchange processes and lateral mixing across shelf breaks and towards the interior of the deep ocean will also be examined.

Qualifications for this position include:

  • A Master's degree or the equivalent in oceanography, meteorology, physics, applied mathematics, or related fields, or applicant must have submitted a master's thesis for assessment prior to the application deadline;
  • Knowledge of physical processes in the ocean;
  • Strong skills in mathematics and programming;
  • Ability to work independently and in a structured manner; and
  • Proficiency in both written and oral English.

Experience in oceanographic field work, particularly with instrumentation used on moorings, underwater gliders, and autonomous underwater vehicles; experience in data analysis; and authorship or co-authorship in scientific publications will be an advantage.

Applications must be submitted online and include:

  • A brief description of the applicant's research interests and motivation for applying for the position;
  • Names and contact information for two referees, one of which should be the main advisor for the master's thesis or equivalent thesis;
  • A curriculum vitae;
  • Transcripts and diplomas showing completion of the Bachelor's and Master's degrees, or official confirmation that the Master's thesis has been submitted;
  • Relevant certificates and references;
  • A list of any works of a scientific nature (publication list); and
  • Any peer review publications in the applicant’s name.
