UiT The Arctic University of Norway invites applications for three PhD positions in Arctic biological oceanography. These four-year, fixed-term positions will be located in Tromsø, Norway.
Available positions are in the areas of:
- Sea ice and pelagic primary production with molecular mapping of primary producers;
- Vertical flux in different ice regimes and seasons, with focus on pelagic-benthic coupling; and
- Population dynamics and productivity of zooplankton (mainly copepods) in different seasons.
The regional focus of the projects is the northern Barents Sea and adjacent Arctic Basin, with a transect covering the gradient from boreal to Arctic conditions, and shelf to basin. Seagoing field work under harsh conditions will be required as well as potential, short research visits with national/international collaborators.
A Master's degree or equivalent in biology, marine biology, marine science, or related field is required. Experience and skills in basic lab, analytical, and statistical methods are essential. A background in marine ecology, biological, physical, and chemical oceanography is a strong benefit, as is experience in polar field sampling and experimental design. Peer-reviewed publications will be also be considered a benefit. Prior work experience in an interdisciplinary research team setting and teaching experience are beneficial. Applicants must be fluent in English (written and oral), and be willing to learn Norwegian within a reasonable time.
Applications must include a statement of the applicant’s personal and scientific interest in taking a PhD degree, including an outline of a PhD project idea specific to one of the three research foci (total maximum of two pages).
Applicants must indicate which of the three positions they are applying to.
