The Institute of Arctic and Marine Biology at UiT - The Arctic University of Norway invites applications for a professor in coastal marine ecology with a focus on biological responses to environmental stresses, such as climate change and/or human activities in the coastal systems of northern Norway, Svalbard, and elsewhere. This permanent position will be located in Tromsø, Norway.
Research and experiments studying environmental effects on and/or biological interactions in coastal communities are highly desirable, and may target marine invertebrates, macrophytes, and/or fishes. Candidates that include, or focus on, benthic systems in the intertidal and/or subtidal are encouraged to apply. A strong background in experimental design will be regarded as favorable. The successful candidate will also be teaching and advising students at the bachelor, Master, and PhD levels.
Minimum requirements for this position include a PhD in biology, marine biology, ecology, zoology, marine science, or similar field; a background in coastal ecology; strong publication record; and experience with generating external funding. The successful applicant may be hired at the Associate or Full Professor level, and must document a strong commitment to teaching.
Strong written and oral communication skills in the English language are a requirement. Skills in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language are preferable. Otherwise, the candidate is expected to learn the Norwegian language to a functional level within a period of about three years.
Applications must include:
- A cover letter explaining motivation and research interests;
- A curriculum vitae summarizing education, positions, and academic work;
- Diplomas and transcripts from completed degrees;
- Two to three references with contact details;
- Teaching portfolio;
- Documentation of proficiency in the English language; and
- Description of applicant’s academic production, stating which works they consider their most important academic works, up to ten (a doctoral thesis counts as one work).
Documentation must be in English or a Scandinavian language.
