The American Geophysical Union (AGU) is currently accepting abstract submissions for the 2019 Fall Meeting. The meeting will be held 9-13 December 2019 in San Francisco, California.

Conveners of the following two sessions invite abstract submissions:

SESSION A008: Arctic and Midlatitude Linkage: Causes and Effects
Conveners: Yutian Wu, Xiangdong Zhang, Qinghua Ding, and Baek-Min Kim

The Arctic has experienced an unprecedented sea ice loss and warming in recent decades. It is important to understand the processes that lead to the Arctic changes. Meanwhile, the Arctic changes could also impact the jet streams, storm tracks, and possibly extreme weather events in the midlatitudes, which has important implications in understanding and predicting the midlatitude weather and climate.

The goal of this session is to synthesize both the causes and effects between the Arctic and the midlatitudes. Contributions from the following topics are encouraged: 1) what are the causes that lead to the Arctic sea ice decline and amplified warming? 2) what are the effects of the Arctic changes on the midlatitudes and the underlying mechanisms (i.e., atmospheric teleconnection, stratosphere-troposphere coupling, ocean processes)? Conveners welcome studies that use theory, observations, and model experiments to understand the Arctic-midlatitude linkage in various time scales including intraseasonal, interannual, and climate change time scales

SESSION C021: Integrating Observations and Models to Better Understand a Changing Arctic System
Conveners: Marika M. Holland, Donald K. Perovich, and Jennifer E. Kay

The Arctic environment is changing at an unprecedented rate. There is a significant need to understand ongoing Arctic system change and predict its future behavior. Model studies play a fundamental role in these tasks as a tool for experimentation and prediction. However, progress in model development often suffers from a disconnect with discoveries made in the observational community. In turn, observational activities could make better use of model guidance regarding the relative importance of various processes and improved sampling strategies. This session welcomes presentations that integrate in situ observations and remote sensing data with Arctic modeling activities to enhance the understanding of the changing Arctic system. Examples of this integration include methods to use observations in model validation and improvement, observational network design that use models to guide observations, and data assimilation activities which combine models and observations to enhance understanding and prediction of the Arctic system. Studies addressing the atmosphere, ocean, sea ice, terrestrial systems and the coupling among them, including physical, biological, and biogeochemical interactions are welcome.
