The University Centre in Svalbard (UNIS) invites applications for a PhD research fellowship in Arctic marine molecular ecology. This full-time, four-year position will be located in Longyearbyen and Tromsø, Norway.
The successful applicant is expected to develop a PhD project on diet assessment of selected small pelagic, sympagic, and benthic invertebrates in a seasonal perspective using molecular tools. The regional focus is the northern Barents Sea and adjacent Arctic Basin along a transect covering the gradient from boreal to Arctic conditions, and shelf to basin. Seagoing field work under harsh conditions may be part of the research as well as short research visits with national and international collaborators.
This position will be based at the Department of Arctic Biology at UNIS, and the candidate will be admitted to the PhD program at the Department of Arctic and Marine Biology, University of Tromsø – The Arctic University of Norway (UiT), and will spend part of the PhD period at UiT.
Qualifications include:
- A Master's degree or the equivalent in a relevant field, such as marine biology, marine sciences, or molecular biology, or must have submitted a master's thesis for assessment prior to the application deadline;
- Experience and skills in basic lab, analytical, and statistical methods;
- Ability to work independently and in a structured manner, yet function well within a team;
- Proficiency in both written and oral English;
- Ability to carrying out field work, including participation on research cruises and experience in marine polar field sampling is advantageous;
- Experience and skills in the use of molecular genetic tools and analyses of molecular genetic data are strongly desirable, as is knowledge in marine ecology;
- Experience in experimental design is a strong benefit;
- Authorship or co-authorship of scientific publications is an advantage; and
- Prior work and teaching experience in an interdisciplinary research team setting is beneficial.
