Dalhousie University invites applications for a two-year MSc to three-year PhD position in polar remote sensing. This position will be located in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada.

The research will involve microwave satellite remote sensing measurements of water vapor and surface properties in the polar regions. The overall goal of the project will be to develop better retrievals from the raw satellite data. The successful candidate will be using a combination of optimal estimation and artificial neural networks together with the calculation of advanced error statistics and validation activities.

There will be a particular focus on wintertime measurements, when the water vapor loading is relatively low and the Arctic climate has proved most sensitive. The data will be valuable for studies of long-term change and for use in data assimilation systems used in numerical weather prediction. Using the measurements to assess the accuracy of atmospheric reanalyses – and thereby our understanding of past and future climates – is a key component of the work.

Qualifications include a BS or MSc degree in physics, mathematics, engineering, or computer science with a minimum grade-point average of 3.7. The successful applicant will be expected to complete Atmospheric Science courses in the Department’s graduate curriculum. Applicants must have excellent communication skills, both written and oral, in the English language. Strong quantitative abilities and programming experience is required. Preference will be given to students who have prior experience with the python programming language. The ability to work independently and as part of a team is essential.

Applicants must complete the Department’s pre-application form. In the pre-application form, applicants should explain how their interests and experiences make them a suitable candidate for the position.
