The Department of Physics and Atmospheric Science at Dalhousie University invites applications for a graduate student position in satellite remote sensing of the Arctic atmosphere and surface physics and atmospheric science. The degree is expected to be a two-year (MSc) to three-year (PhD) commitment and will be located in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada.

The Department is developing computational methods for microwave satellite remote sensing of the Arctic atmosphere and surface, with a particular focus on water vapor (an important greenhouse gas). The graduate work will involve using optimal estimation, artificial neural networks, and statistical methods to produce the most accurate retrievals possible. The measurements will be used for climate change studies and numerical weather prediction efforts.

A BSc or MSc degree in physics, mathematics, engineering, or computer science with a minimum grade-point average (GPA) of 3.7 is required. Computer programming experience (preferably in Python) is also required. Strong mathematical abilities are desirable.

Applicants must complete the Department’s pre-application form. In the pre-application form, applicants should identify Professor T. J. Duck as the professor with whom they wish to work, and explain how their interests and experiences make them a suitable candidate for the position.
