Dr. Xoco Shinbrot Joins Office of Polar Programs as a 2021-2022 AAAS Science & Technology Policy Fellow

The National Science Foundation (NSF) Office of Polar Programs (OPP) announce that Dr. Xoco Shinbrot has joined OPP as a 2021-2022 American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Science & Technology Policy Fellow.

Dr. Xoco Shinbrot has joined the OPP as the newest 2021-2022 AAAS Science & Technology Policy Fellow hosted by the Section for Arctic Sciences. The daughter of a Mexican historian and mathematician, Xoco (pronounced Sho’ko) is an order-based name of Aztec origin meaning youngest daughter.

Dr. Shinbrot is a conservation social scientist, originally from Santa Barbara, California. Dr. Shinbrot received her B.A. from McGill University in Environment and Development, MSc. in Environmental Science and Policy at Johns Hopkins University, and PhD in Ecology from Colorado State University in the department of Human Dimensions of Natural Resources. Her doctoral research centered on how stewardship and climate adaptation could be fostered through community-based natural resource management, payment for ecosystem services, and citizen science programs in rural and urban Latin America.

As a postdoctoral fellow, Dr. Shinbrot taught two classes at Cornell University—Climate Solutions and Global Water Sustainability—as part of a university-wide program to move toward active learning. She is driven to help ecosystems thrive while advancing human wellbeing, and is excited to continue to engage in science policy work and community-based natural resource management in the Arctic.

Dr. Shinbrot is excited to join the Office of Polar Programs, and in her professional and personal life, is dedicated to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion.
