The Sitka Sound Science Center invites applications for a postdoctoral fellow to work on a study of how small communities in Southeast Alaska have responded to the COVID 19 pandemic. This fixed-term position can be done remotely, with some travel to Alaska when COVID permits.
This work will emphasize different community responses and experiences throughout the pandemic, as well as lessons learned about community resilience and sustainability. The postdoctoral fellow will build upon existing data from the first year of the grant, which has involved collecting surveys and interviews from small Southeast Alaska communities. The work was done in collaboration with the RAND Corporation and Central Council Tlingit Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska. The postdoctoral fellow will take this research further, for example by conducting further research on variable vaccination rates and motivations across communities, or exploring the implications of deferred medical care for rural Southeast Alaskan communities during the COVID-19 pandemic. The fellow will have leeway to help direct the direction of follow-on research, and will be expected to assist with writing a follow-on proposal to National Science Foundation (NSF).
Examples of duties include:
- Building upon existing findings from previous research, proactively develop an exploratory and confirmatory research plan leveraging asset-based and community-partnered approaches
- Implement research protocols; collect and analyze research data
- Ongoing dissemination and regular feedback loops with community stakeholders
- Continue to be responsive and adaptive to emerging stakeholder requests
Doctoral candidates who will complete their PhD by fall of 2021 and early-career PhDs within five years of receiving their doctoral degree are eligible for the position. The candidate is expected to be comfortable with both qualitative and quantitative research methods, and to have experience and/or strong interest in community-based participatory approaches to research. The initial term of the position is one year, which is renewable dependent upon funding from NSF.
Applicants with interdisciplinary training and interests, and who are interested in careers that focus on rural and remote communities are likely to be a good fit for this position. Experience with case-based research approaches (e.g., qualitative comparative analysis), familiarity with patient datasets, and/or factor analysis or latent variable modelling would be helpful.
