SESSION HE008 - Oceanography of Alaskan Waters: From Ocean Currents to Whales
Conveners: Wieslaw Maslowski, Carin J. Ashjian, Seth L. Danielson, Kate Stafford, and Eric Salas
The marine environment around Alaska, from the Gulf of Alaska, through the Bering and Chukchi seas, to the Beaufort Sea has experienced some of earth's most dramatic changes due to global climate warming. Those changes either contribute to or result from Arctic amplification, an accelerated Arctic air temperature warming, compared to the global average. Improved understanding and projections of future Alaskan marine environments are critical to community and policymaker concerns regarding climate change adaptation and mitigation, food and national security, resource development, transportation, and other issues. Addressing such concerns is challenging, in part because it involves interdisciplinary science, from process-level biophysical coupling to large scale ocean and climate dynamics, using local knowledge along with field, remote sensing, and modeling studies. Conveners invite contributions on all subjects related to the Alaskan marine environment and ecosystems.
