Determining reliably the recent changes of the large continental ice sheets is a major scientific challenge. The results are of great societal importance, especially in terms of global sea level rise. Various satellite missions have provided unique data for monitoring the changing cryosphere, with each measuring technique having different strengths and limitations.
This course will cover fundamentals of space based monitoring of glaciers and ice sheets, such as satellite radar and laser altimetry, satellite gravimetry (GRACE), GPS and SAR interferometry.
