He teaches natural resource policy, sustainability, and public administration. His current research includes community and institutional response to climate change. Before his university appointment, Jim spent 31 years in environmental and natural resource management in Alaska. His public service includes nine years on the City and Borough of Juneau Assembly including Deputy Mayor. Jim received his PhD in Natural Resources and Sustainability Science from the University of Alaska Fairbanks, an MPA from the University of Alaska Southeast, and a Bachelor of Arts in Environmental Studies from Eisenhower College. Jim balances his teaching with serving on several state and local nonprofit boards, where he lectures and consults on sustainability planning. Jim lives in Juneau and is married to Beth Kerttula and has a very spoiled dog name Cody.
