Executive Summary
The Arctic has reached the end of the 2020 summer retreat season. The September monthly average sea ice extent was 3.92 million square kilometers, based on the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) Sea Ice Index (SII). This is the second lowest extent in the satellite record (the multichannel passive microwave satellite record started in 1979).
